Our skin comprised of two main parts – epidermis and dermis. Epidermis is the superficial and thinner portion which serves to protect the skin and underlying tissues from abrasions, heat, microbes and chemicals. The deeper and thicker connective tissue portion called as dermis hosts several accessory structures of the skin like hair follicles, oil (sebaceous) glands and sweat (sudoriferous) glands. Sebaceous glands secrete greasy substances called sebum that will moistens the hair, waterproofs the skin as well as inhibit growth of some bacteria. During childhood, sebaceous glands are relatively small and inactive. However, during puberty, androgen hormones from the testes, ovaries and adrenal glands will stimulates the activation of sebaceous glands, therefore increases the size of the glands as well as the production of sebum (Tortora & Derrickson, 2011).
