When the young Greek boy Achilles was born, it was foretold that he would die very young. To prevent this, his mother bathed him in the river Styx, which granted invulnerability in all places on his body except where his mother held him out of the river; his Achilles tendon. Because of his great strength and invulnerability, Achilles became a man of war, surviving many battles and becoming a great hero. He was thought to be immortal and all powerful, until one day a poisoned arrow lodged into his heel, his one weak spot, and killed him soon after. It is still refered to today not only because the myth was made popular by the Greeks, but also because the tendon in which Achilles was struck was named the "Achilles tendon" due to its fragile and important nature on the human body. …show more content…
One's "Achilles' Heel" is representative of one's weakness. Just as Achilles was all powerful and invulnerable in battle, but was taken down with one small arrow to his weak spot, an Achilles' Heel can represent said weakness, to any individual, on a physical, mental, or emotional level.
