Abraham Lincoln is known as one of America’s greatest heroes due to both his impeccable impact on the nation and his unique appeal. He has a remarkable story of his rise from humble beginnings to achieving the highest office in the country; then, a sudden and tragic death at a time when his country needed him most to complete the great task remaining before the nation. Abraham Lincoln’s tenure in office was a success due to his issue of the Emancipation Proclamation, his foreign policy to prevent other countries from intervening in America’s Civil War, and because he was a steadfast commander in chief during the Civil war which preserved the United States as one nation.

He had two siblings, his sister Sarah and younger brother, Thomas, who died during infancy. When he was around two years old, him and his family moved to another farm on Knob Creek and attended school for a few weeks with his older sister Sarah and learned his ABC’s. His family only stayed there for five years before moving once again to the state of Indiana. When he was nine, his mother died of tremetol. This was very devastating to Lincoln and he began to alienate himself from his father. A few months later, his father remarried to a woman named Sarah Bush Johnston and she showed more affection to Abraham than either of his biological parents ever did. She encouraged him to read and he would be completely immersed in any book he could get his hands on from libraries and neighbors. He would walk miles just to borrow a book. His father didn’t approve of this however. He viewed Abraham as being lazy because he’d rather read than work. In March of 1830, his father moved his family again, this time to Macon County, Illinois and then again to Coles County.
