It has been estimated that over twelve million people were held in slavery. Many of these slaves were forced into labor and were sexual servants. Slavery began around 1619 when African slaves were brought to America to help aid in production of tobacco, rice, and indigo crops (Brooks, 2014). Slavery was practiced throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth century. These African slaves helped build the economic foundations of the nation (Brooks, 2014).
