There is no clear decision as to when an unborn child has its own rights. Some Mothers do not find out they are pregnant until the fourth or fifth week of pregnancy. Then, there is the matter of letting the Father know, but what if there is no “father”? That is where there are issues whether to abort or not. The Mother has to decide if she is physically and financially stable to raise a child. If it is a teen pregnancy, there is the matter of school, working, money, but most importantly, responsibility. If she decides that she does not want to keep the baby, what happens next? Should she abort it? Should she go through the entire pregnancy and then just give it up for adoption? Does the baby not matter because it is not born yet? So MANY questions and outcomes to be considered before making a decision, and unfortunately, most people take the easiest route without considering the baby. However, the baby’s future DOES matter and many people do not see it that way. The baby should also have a chance to live. Before the baby is two months (8 weeks old) old, it is called an embryo, after the two months, it is officially called a fetus. As a fetus, the baby should have its own rights, such as: the right to be born due to its advanced physical development, the right to be a part of the pro-life debate, and the right to be protected from abuse. Once the fetus is two months, there are drastic physical developments accomplished that have given it rights. A full baby develops within 37 to 42 weeks, but by the eighth week, ”it is over an inch long, face begins to form with eyes, ears, mouth and tooth buds. The arms and legs are now movable, the brain is also forming,” and most importantly “fetal heartbeat is now detectable through an ultrasound” (Santrock p77). If the baby is a boy, the penis has also begun to develop by this point as well (“The Baby’s Growth”). The mother has also experienced some changes in her body by this time as well. For examples, her respiratory rate has increased to deliver more oxygen to the uterus. The entire cardiovascular system adjusts by increasing blood volume, developing more blood vessels and increasing heart rate. All the organs in the abdominal cavity have readjusted by moving around to make more room for the uterus to expand. Also, her breasts have increased in size, the nipple sticks out more and they begin to prepare for breastfeeding (“Body Changes during Pregnancy”). All these changes to the mother shows that being pregnant means serious business. The fetus’s advanced developments of the fetus also show that it is now, a HUMAN BEING. The fetus should have the right to be a part of the pro-life debate.

Yet some people do not appreciate the opportunity and instead they damage the uterus each time an abortion is done. An abortion may lead to many complications. For examples: excessive bleeding from a torn cervix, infections that lead to fevers or scarring, an “incompetent cervix” from forcing open the cervix for an abortion, and “perforated uterus, bowel, or bladder” due to damage from the unsafe instruments used. Worst of all, “women who have abortions more than double their risk of future sterility,” or can sometimes even lead themselves to death (“Abortion Risks”). Psychological damage, like “guilt” or regret” may also affect the conscious of the mother. In the end, not only will a “pro-life” debate save the innocent fetuses, but it will also reduce the physical damage that some pregnant women do to themselves. Women who do not care about being pregnant and do not abort the baby, will sometimes abuse the baby internally. Here, “abuse” is referring to women who drink, smoke and do all kinds of illegal drugs that cause physical damage to the fetus.
