Tone In Suns Essay The author of the book A Thousand Splendid Suns uses many examples of imagery, such as the following excerpts to make a reader feel a certain way, or to help them better understand the events taking place at the time.
In the first excerpt, Laila is waiting to board the bus after Wakil “bought tickets” for Laila, Mariam, and Aziza. She is in a pleasant, unbreakably optimistic mood. Her feelings are reflected by the imagery the author provides us with. It mentions that it is sunny and warm outside. The sun is a positive symbol because it represents life and what keeps things going, without it, there is nothing. She is more in tune with her surroundings rather than drowning them out or being blind to them. She notices little things such as when the carpenter is sawing wood, sending wood chips flying everywhere, and the vehicles passing with their grimy, soot-covered windows. The windows of the vehicles being “coated with soot and grime,” may be a sign of foreshadowing. The foreshadowed event may be that someone is about to dirty up the situation, or take away the beauty of her feelings, all while ruining her little bit of hope that she does have. The buses have symbols on them, she notices peacocks, lions, rising suns, and glittering swords. Peacocks are beautiful, colorful birds, this reflects on Laila’s feelings of happiness and hopefulness. Happiness is a beautiful thing, and Laila notices the beauty in the little things going on around her. Lions are a very common symbol of boldness and bravery. Laila and Mariam’s decision to leave Rasheed and try to catch a bus, was a very brave move and they were taking a risk that could mean life or being caught
