Themes of Geography-Sicily/Italy
Location- My dad is from Sicily the Island off of Italy. We use this in our culture and traditions all the time. The city from i am from is an influence in lots of stuff in life because it is who i am and can tell people stuff about me from where i come from. My life is different than people from other countries and even from other places in Italy.

Human Environment Interactions- My parents being from a different part of Italy then most people means my views of Italian Culture are different and for HEI Sicily interacts differently than Italy too the environment. We eat a lot of Italian foods, so when we dispose all our leftovers usually they are greasy. But the key part of throwing away food is that we throw a lot of it away because we make food in big batches. Another HEI is all of the rivers and mountains in Italy are getting trashed because we are throwing so much away. All of garbage is starting to add up and will soon destroy the beautiful scenery that is apparent now.

My culture in my home is similar to those living in Sicily. The land in Sicily is mountainous and flat at some points and has the most crystal clear ocean waters around it because after dumping all the trash and leftover garbage in the ocean and such there are so many “anti-garbage” groups around that the water is always gorgeous for all tourists to see. Sicily has so many nice and sweet people, there is a crime rate but that is mostly for little petty-theft things. Overall is a very establishes island that loves tourists and has lovely accommodations all year

Although I reside in Texas now, I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. I am still growing as a person and though I am now accustomed to Texas tradition, my home country still holds a strong place in my heart. Growing up in different environments and being influenced by different cultures is truly an impactful gift. I have spent about half of my life in Nigeria and half of my life in Texas and growing up in these two vastly different environments has lead me to be more adaptive of my surroundings and more accepting of others and their cultures.…

I was born in San Jose, California and my family moved to Ohio, the heartland of America, soon after. I remember always peering through the window by the stairs as the snow fell then sledding down the snowy driveway with glee. During my childhood, I spent a year in China experiencing my cultural roots. My family then moved to Los Angeles where I have spent nearly thirteen years of my life exposed to a blend of different cultures and communities. The diversity encourages me to stay true to my background and enjoy standing out rather than fitting in.…

Italians are commonly much friendlier and spend longer amounts of time with their friends and colleagues when compared to Americans. I had heard similar statements before my trip but I had always dismissed them as being false and generalized. But after my first night in Italy, my concept of the stereotypical Italian changed. Italians being happier and friendlier than Americans was no longer a statement criticizing American’s lack of basic social skills, it was evidently the truth.…

Italy was once a giant country in 1861, later in the year, Italy was divided into two groups, one being Northern Italy and the other Southern Italy. At this time there were many peasants and farmers in Southern Italy who mainly thrived in Mezzogiorno. “Those Italians who emigrated from the Mezzogiorno were largely of the peasant class of farmers and day laborers called the contadino class. The contadino included agriculture worked who owned a tiny plot of land and leased additional land from the large landowners” (Mindel, 64).…

My “Where I’m From Poem” demonstrates who I am, and my identity. Each line of the poem reveals another aspect of my identity, and opens up to who I am even more. The whole poem is a metaphor of my identity, which is based on my inner and outer self. For example, in line six I state: “I am from the tropical beaches”. This is a metaphor because I was not actually born on the beach, but instead, is something that makes me who I am.…

As I previously discussed family relationships are extremely important to the Italians, and they do what they can to ensure their family bonds, stay strong, constant and healthy. Along with family they take pride in their culture, which involves the Italian food, the Roman Catholic religion and even the history of the country. These three aspects have so much beneath the surface and could be studied endlessly, that is what makes the Italian discourse community so interesting. Lastly we see the Italian language which is evidently very unique to Italians and makes them one as a whole. The power of language allows for smooth and an easy communication between the members of the community.…

The article I chose is called “The Arctic has lost so much ice that now people want to race yachts through it.” This article relates to the 5 themes of geography because it uses and is involved in location, place, human-environment interaction, movement and regions. The article has an overall discussion about how the sea ice covering the top of the world reached the lowest maximum extent yet observed in winter, when ice is at its peak. This means that in the last four years, Arctic sea ice has seen a new low both for its seasonal winter peak in 2015 and for its summer minimum in 2012. I will explain how this article uses the 5 themes of geography throughout my writing.…
