A Summary Of Migraine

Decent Essays
Migraine causes are still not understood but genetics and environmental factors appear to play an important role in this diseases. Migraines may be caused by changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway.
Pain in the nervous system also may occur when there are imbalances in brain chemicals including serotonin. Role of serotonin in migraines are still studying by the researchers. During migraine attacks, serotonin levels may drop. Substances called neuropeptides may release by trigeminal nerve which will move to the brain’s outer covering ( meninges ). Other neurotransmitters play a role in the pain of migraine, including calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) ( Swanson, 2016 ).

Pain is a feeling triggered by the nervous system. Our bodies are covered with millions of pain receptors called nociceptors. Nociceptors send a signal to the spinal cord then to the brain. Nociceptors trigger responses when you are experience pain, like if you touch something hot your nociceptors would send a reflex message to jerk your hand away from the danger. Pain is initially processed in the spinal cord then sent to…

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is attempting to get basic research on the brain and nervous system, and use the knowledge to reduce the load of neurological disease. NINDS-funded scientists are studying the element that leads to long term nerve pain disorders, and how the affected nerves are related to the numbness, loss of function, and pain. Researchers also are studying biomechanical stresses that provide to the nerve damage that are in charge for symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome in order to better understand, treat, and prevent…

Headaches are a common symptom in patients that are diagnosed with MTBI. Individuals who participate in high contact activities are prone to and have a higher risk of direct cranial impact. Athletes who participate in high contact sports and military personnel are subjected to experience head injury from physical impact. The objective of this study is to resolve the chronic pain from headaches, which come in conjunction with MTBI cases, using transcranial magnetic stimulation. The search for an alternative solution to MTBI-related headaches (MTBI-HA) without high abusive risks and psychosomatic side-effects, will provide effective prevention, treatment, and rehab to patients who suffer from MTBI, post-concussion, and chronic posttraumatic headaches.…

Depression generally takes a toll on the limbic system and the function of neurotransmitters and neurons. The limbic system regulates activities like emotion, physical and a sexual drive, as well as this the stress response is also influenced. Because of the effect depression has on the brain, it affects the entire body. Serotonin, a neurotransmitter, can alter the pain threshold, making it increasingly more sensitive. Serotonin can also affect sleep and the sex drive.…

This week I would like to share some information about how oxygen can be used to treat cluster headaches. But first, here is a short summary of why I am familiar with this treatment. In early 2016, I went to a neurologist and finally received a more accurate diagnosis that I suffer from both migraine and cluster headaches. Previously, I was told by numerous doctors that I only suffered from migraines, despite the fact that some of my symptoms tended to be cyclical and did not feel like migraines to me. But I am grateful that my current family doctor felt that I needed to be evaluated by a headache specialist.…

Part of the reason researchers believe migraines are less prevalent in seniors is that seniors have learned to manage their migraine triggers. Migraines are usually linked to life events. For example, stress, foods, caffeine, and even changes in the weather can cause a migraine to start. By learning what their triggers are, seniors are able to modify their lifestyle in order to prevent or mediate the occurrence of a migraine.…

Patrick Wall and Ron Melzack’s theory of gate control explains that pain does not directly result from the triggering of the pain receptor neurons but rather the interaction between the different neurons is responsible for modulating its perception. The theory proposes that there is a neurological “gate” in the spinal cord, which tends to hinder or permit the pain signals transmission to the brain area (Moayedi & Davis, 2013). Different from the actual gate, which closes and opens to give room for things to pass, the spinal cords’ “gate” works by differentiating between the fibers that are carrying the pain signals. The pain signal that is moving through the large nerve fibers is obstructed while those in the small nerve fibers can freely pass. Pain is a sense of balance between the messages that are moving into the spinal cord via the small nerve fibers.…
