Jamereo: A Short Story

Superior Essays
Jamereo became homeless after his mother died and father went to jail. He was sleeping on the subway trains and public buses riding them back and forth. He would stay at the library during the day because that was the only free place available. He would play video games on the computer, chatting, and Facebooking Annabelle. Although he couldn’t live with her at the time, she helped get him a cell phone, food stamps, and most importantly, stay out of trouble. She would talk on the phone with him all night until his battery ran out as he rode those cold buses. Jamereo heard about a program at the YMCA while taking a free shower there. He decided to enroll in it. He was assigned a case worker who seemed like a very nice guy. The man was professional, educated and genuinely wanted to help black youths get out of unfortunate situations. Jamereo felt like he could trust the guy. Everything changed when the case worker invited him to his personal room to watch some blu-ray movies. Jamereo decided it would be ok. While in the room, the case worker told Jamereo that he was actually a college student studying drama at Columbine University. The case worker wanted to record Jamereo’s feet along with him eating some chicken wings while talking sensual about how delicious they are. The case worker claimed it was for a drama project. Looking confused Jamereo asked, “how much?” “Well, what are you willing to do?” asked the case worker as he starts caressing Jamereo’s shoulders. Jamereo immediately gets up and puts the case worker on his back. Jamereo runs out the room and never returns to the YMCA. While in the streets, the police walks up to Jamereo and slaps handcuffs on him. They charged him with assault. The appointed judge offered a bail amount that he couldn’t pay it. He contacted his father who was already in prison but couldn’t do anything for him. So he decided to call Annabelle to see if she could help. She got him a lawyer and paid his bail. He was able to stay at her house between the court dates but not permanently. Her parents were iffy about him being there but they allowed it to make their daughter happy. Eventually the charge reduced to a misdemeanor and all he had to do was community service and a few months on probation. As Jamereo finish eating the shrimp, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett walks through the door from work. “Mr. Bennett, your daughter sure knows how to cook!” Jamereo says excitedly. Annabelle blushes. Mr. Bennett says calmly, “Hey, Jamereo. She gets it from her mother.” “Beautiful.”, as Jamereo sucks the tartar sauce off his fingers. Mr. Bennett looks at Annabelle and says with authority, “Go and put on some clothes, young lady.” Annabelle doesn’t say a thing as she complies with her father’s request. …show more content…
She doesn’t seem all that bad. She was actually very respectful to me. Is that part of her personality or do you tell all your girlfriends about me? ” Annabelle asks curiously.
“Yeah, I do.” Jamereo says calmly with swag, “They know not to fuck with you or talk shit about you. I put them in check. I put you over them, always. They gotta respect you at all times, no joke. I can call any one of them right now with you on the phone and they won’t say a thing. That’s how much control I have over they minds. That’s why I had you to answer the phone for me. I have nothing to hide from them, from you, or from anybody, you feel me? They are a bunch of nobodies to me.” Jamereo confidently says while shrugging his shoulders.
“Jamereo, you have to stop talking down on the women and men in your life, especially if they’re helping you. You know how women get. They become jealous. They want to feel like they’re the only one. You’re using these girls just for sex, that’s not cool. They want to feel special. They want to feel wanted. Do you want something more than sex?” asked a concerned but curious Annabelle.
“Yea, I do. But they hoes.” Annabelle glances at Jamereo again with a snide

There was, however, a third option that many Mexicans have and currently are taking upon themselves and their families and that is to immigrate to the U.S. for a chance of a better, safer life. Of course, a new start in the U.S. does not mean life would become easier. Because of their lack of formal education, the refugees and immigrants fleeing from Mexico – from the time of the Revolution to the third quarter of the century – mostly found work in the only thing they knew: farming. Ernest Calderon, of Mexican ancestry, describes his time as a migrant farmer in his youth where one would be “pretty lucky” if an independent Anglo farmer had lodgings for migrants farmers, often “sweeping out a chicken coop” for a “livable” place to sleep.…

Growing up in a southern Alabama town of less than 10,000 residents, I was not truly aware of the issue of homelessness. Homelessness was only a subject which I had seen in the news and in movies. However, when I became a peer helper as a junior in high school, my perception soon changed. I became part of a peer mentoring program, in which I counseled underprivileged and troubled middle school students. Through this program I discovered that homelessness was not a problem rooted in major cities, for it lied even in a town as small my own.…

However, when people are at their utmost vulnerable there is no force greater that human compassion. I believe that like Mother Teresa we should all strive to judge less rather, we should help to alleviate the suffering of others. I have spent many summers volunteering at a food pantry in inner city Fort Wayne.…
