The story of Hamlet is full of drama and tragedy with which prince Hamlet struggles to navigate. Hamlet’s life suddenly takes a turn for the worst following the tragic and mysterious death of his father, King Hamlet. While Hamlet is still mourning over his father's death, his mother marries his uncle, who has taken the thrown. Because of this, Hamlet becomes furious with his mother and her decision to marry his uncle Claudius. These events, along with his troubling relationship with the beautiful Ophelia, began to cause Hamlet to turn insane. Prince Hamlet is quite the sarcastic person throughout the play. One example of this would be the remark he made at his mother and uncles wedding reception in which he states, “The funeral baked meats Did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables” (1.2.179-180). Hamlet is sarcastically expressing his disapproval towards his mother’s hasty marriage following the death of his father. As the play goes on, Hamlet’s sarcastic remarks intensify and increase as his insanity becomes increasingly prevalent. The more insane Hamlet becomes, the more sarcastic he gets. To get his uncle to admit to the murder of King Hamlet, Hamlet puts on a play at the royal castle called, The Murder of Gonzago. Hamlet hopes that by having his uncle attend a play that reenacts a murder that very closing resembles that of how he killed the noble king Hamlet, Claudius will admit to the murder. When talking to Ophelia prior to the start of the play, Hamlet informs her that, “We shall know by this fellow. The players cannot keep counsel. They’ll tell all” (3.2.128-129). Hamlet is deviously, yet sarcastically informing Ophelia of his plan to get Claudius to admit to the murder through the reenactment of the play, but because she is so unaware of Hamlets plot, she does not pick up on the clue.
