Jonathan swift’s essay is his proposal on how to deal with children of the less fortunate and make them beneficial to society. He proposed a solution that to him would be the least costly solution possible. First, he says that the children should be fed to the rich people of the country and sold in markets. He reasons that this will provide the families with extra income and free the families of the children from any extra expense that comes with having children. He adds that if the poor families start to gain funds they may rise to higher status over time which will benefit the country’s economic situation by increasing the amount of possible consumers to the market.…

In Jonathan Swift’s satirical essay, A Modest Proposal, the narrator of the essay describes how a number of Ireland’s societal ills could be remedied through the sale of children as lunchmeat. The real thesis of this essay is a far cry from cannibalism, and it in fact criticizes England for its poor treatment of Ireland, specifically Irish Catholics— who are the majority in Ireland. By suggesting that the children of poor Irish Catholics be cannibalized, Swift signifies how much of youths’ lives are being wasted away in poverty at the expense of English imperialism. Although both Swift himself and the narrator of the essay are both Protestants and economists they differ in the key fact that one condones eating children and the other does not.…

Swift’s use of gruesome and vivid diction regarding the imagery of children’s skin as clothes makes readers feel uncomfortable. By making them feel uncomfortably, he forces readers to view not only their personal lives but the lives of Ireland as a whole and draw parallels to the political injustices occurring in Ireland. Swift also uses reduction ad absurdum to express the loss of hope and confidence. Swift writes, “I can think of no one objection, that will possibly be raised against this proposal, unless it should be urged, that the number of people will be thereby much lessened in the kingdom” (I 187-189). Swift’s proposal was written so outrageously, including absurdities such as cannibalism of infants, to stir emotions in readers.…

Many authors in the 18th century intertwined the theme of their short stories with the current events of the time. American authors Kate Chopin, Jack London, and Sarah Jewett passionately communicated a message thru their short stories in order to motivate change or provoke understanding of the society in which they lived. Chopin demonstrates her concern for women’s role in the past, while London shows his concern for survival skills and Jewett proves the importance of nature. The authors of these stories act as “moral purifiers” presenting their case through their creative works that, left up to the reader, may have a positive impact upon society.…

Also, he states that he is not bent on his real ideas alone to fix the problem. Therefore, he says if there are any better ideas, that others should do it. He did not refute the opposing claims to leave room for those who may have better ideas than Swift and therefore, he is not so bent on his ideas. The weakness in Swift’s argument is that it does not account for how the people would feel about helping the poor. They may not feel the need to do anything for the poor; such as feeding them or giving them food.…

Swift’s diction is particularly important for setting and invoking an emotional stage and forming his credibility with the audience, giving him the credibility he needs in his logical arguments. Swift cleverly uses pathos, ethos, and logos to successfully persuade his audience of their absurdity in their approach to dealing with the Irish commoners and poor. For Swift, careful diction and tone allow him to successfully use pathos in persuading his audience. Swift uses three distinct tones to create a neutral persona while making himself into a patriotic, Irish-loving narrator; someone that is relatable and could be trusted. The first sentence of “A Modest Proposal” sets all three tones: despairing and sympathetic, annoyed and condescending, and patriotic.…
