Devil Forest and Honest Abe are not nicknames that are handed out lightly, but these two men were never known to be light. These were the two great heroes of the North and South, from the Civil War. Though there was definitely something special about these two and both were terrifying in their own ways. This continued as he joined as a private into the Cconfederate army, after a short time training he realized how spread out equipment was he offered to equip the regiment with his own money. This surprised his superiors that such a wealthy man had joined as a mere soldier. The Confederate army made him into a Lieutenant Colonel, put him in charge of the 3rd Ttennessee cavalry, and authorized him to recruit mounted rangers. Though Tennise had men being recruited by both sides, Forrest posted offers for men to join playing on the hatred against the “Yankees” to come join his cavalry unit. He was a great leader and fighter having 30 men to his name, even one of his officer who shot him then was stabbed to death by Forrest. Forrest became a feird raider, and known for his cunning tactics and brutally efficient fighting style, taking high kill- to- death ratios and stacking up many victories against the Union. Though his most notorious battle was the battle for Fort Pillow or the massacre of Fort Pillow. A small garrison of Black and White soldiers held the Fort against Forrest, and during the battle there were many conflicting reports on what actually occurred. What is certain is that the fort attempted to surrender as prisoners of war, but forrest wanted total surrender of the garrison and used the time while they were negotiating to move his troops to a position where they could easily overran the garrison. During the ensuing fight the fort was overrun and captured with all the remaining men surrendering.
