I watched as my brother received his daily injection of human growth hormones. He was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency right after he was born. If not for the injections, he would not be able to live a normal life. With the correct prescription, doctors have indeed the power to better the lives of patients.
This has sparked my interest in wanting to dedicate myself to the medical society.
As I study my A Levels, I have found Chemistry and Biology to be particularly useful to support my pursuit of medicine. Being inquisitive in nature, both Chemistry and Biology have provided me with extensive knowledge of biological systems. Shadowing doctors during ward rounds and departmental meetings on every Monday morning has helped me to understand the importance of effective communication within and between different departments. This has broadened my understanding of how the NHS is run and of the importance of teamwork skills between doctors when diagnosing an illness and prescribing treatments.
At a busy General Practice, I had the privilege of observing a practitioner diagnose and prescribe treatments for a wide range of illnesses and injuries. I was deeply impressed by the ability of the GP to work for long hours, even when under tremendous levels of stress.
