Ferdinand and Wife Sophia The day started off with Franz visiting Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovnia, to view the Austro-Hungarian troops located there. The day this all took place was June 28, 1914. Also in the capital at the same time was a Serbian terrorist group known as the “The Black Hand”. The Black Hand consisted of seven men who initially planned to assassinate Franz by practicing techniques such as bomb throwing and shooting techniques which would be used on this day.…
He was a very smart and resourceful man who owned a factory that his father in law invested in. In the book it shows how Vladek got force and survived the war (page 47). Towards the end of the War the German soldiers tried to collect or kill as many jews as they could. Vladek’s whole city was flushed out. Vladek did what he could to avoiding getting caught by the German soldiers.…
The fact that Art is attempting to heal himself along with depicting Vladek’s story, is evident in his biography. Author Elmwood believes that by intertwining himself into the narrative of his father, Art is able to overcome his insecurities and become a part of the family’s history (701). Besides, when Art discovers that Vladek read his comic strip about Anja and asks Vladek if he is angry, Vladek responds that he is glad that Art got it outside his system (104). Thus, in Maus I and II, there is a sense that Vladek and Art are aware that Art is a victim of intergenerational trauma and he needs healing, but in Lost, the narrator seems oblivious, at times. “The narrator whose suffering is to live with traumatised parents and the consequent loss of an identity is more detached from the distress that his parents experience,” explains author Van der Merwe (4).…
Vladek tells Art that “you must eat all what is on your plate” when they are eating dinner (43). In contrast, the middle panel on page 75 illustrates Richieu dumping the food off of his plate and Vladek not saying a word. There is an obvious age gap between the two sons, but because of his hardships in the holocaust, especially with finding food, Vladek was angry when Art did not finish his meal. There were many times when he would have been grateful to have the food that Art does not eat, but because he had not yet experienced that so he was not mad when Richieu did the same thing. This demonstrates how much the holocaust changed Vladek’s personality.…
The idea that one day we will all die is inevitable. Most individuals do not think about the future and death. We shrug this thought from our minds because we cannot predict the future. In some cases, some will say that they are young and that the idea of death, now, is preposterous.…
Schindler’s List, directed by Steven Spielberg, and Maus, written by Art Spiegelman, both focus on retelling the history of the Holocaust and the horrible crimes committed against its victims. With the Jewish population standing at over nine million, the goal of Nazi Germany was to completely dispose of the Jewish race and all other impurities of the world driven by their odium for them. "Evil starts when you begin to treat people as things" (Pratchett 181). Beginning with the Germans, the cruelty was formed and spread very quickly. The Germans grew cruel to the prisoners and the prisoners grew cruel to each other.…
The prisoners at the Holocaust were very affected and had a difficult time identifying “their inability to mourn or to acknowledge their suffering which led them to exhibit a variety of symptoms” (2). Vladek saw people during his time in the concentration camp that were affected physically, emotionally, and mentally which would have been hard to witness. This is why Vladek feels like he needs to take care of his health and benefit from the opportunity to care for himself and make good decisions about how he…
Nicholas II played a vital, negative role in contributing to his complete downfall during the early 20th century. His reluctance to become Tsar was a major factor that contributed to his own demise. The release of the October Manifesto in 1905 was one of the key events that led to the end of Tsar Nicholas’s rule over Russia. Tsar Nicholas’s poor leadership in World War 1 as well as his weak-willed personality was also issues that further contributed to the collapse of the Romanov Dynasty. These factors and events severely influenced the political, social and economic aspects of his ruling .The…
Source A shows a painting based on a terrible day in St. Petersburg January 9th, 1905. Analysing this painting, we can see the lined-up palace guards, many firing at the protestors while they collapse, and scramble for safety. Bloody Sunday started an attempted revolution for great change. This protest ended in a catastrophe and gained Nicholas II the name; ‘Bloody Nicholas’ due to his palace guards opening fire on the protestors upon confusion and chain reaction further impacting the lives of Russians. Such an event where Nicholas wasn’t around would give a terrible nickname.…
In troubling times, many people look to their faith as a source of guidance and inspiration. This certainly rings true in two graphic novels: Maus: A Survivor’s Story, written by Art Spiegelman, and Persepolis, written by Marjane Satrapi. Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman’s experience as a Polish Jew in the Holocaust. Persepolis, an autobiographical novel, follows Marjane, a religious young girl who has a passion for activism growing up during the Islamic Revolution.…
He was caring, rich, and very resourceful, and his relationship with Anja was full of love and closeness. His traumatic experiences in the holocaust definitely played a large role in his drastic personality…
Leo Tolstoy wrote: The Death of Ivan Ilyich in 1886 to show his view of how life should be, how we all should live, and what actually matter most at the end of everything. According to Tolstoy, there are 2 ways to live life; one is by outer appearance which are propriety, decorum, and standards of conduct, and second, inner appearances, and spiritual life which are “the real thing” that makes one’s life worthwhile. Insincere life style is the first way human can choose to live and it is shown at the beginning of novel when Tostoy explains that Ivan Ilyich’s life is based on an outer appearances and social statuses means. He is surround by “the best circles of lawyers, and wealthy gentry in town...” (54).…

One of the more interesting films of this time period was, Ivan the Terrible, directed by Sergei Eisenstein. The film was actually commissioned by the Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, who admired and idolized Ivan. This two-part historical epic, however, went against Party lines when it portrayed Ivan in a negative light. This resulted in the banning of the film on the order of Stalin which terminated the proposition of a third-part to the series. Oddly enough the first Part of the series, Ivan the Terrible, Part I, won the approval of Joseph Stalin as well as a Stalin Price for portraying the ruler as a national Hero.…
In Maus women are not depicted as being capable as men, this occurs in Vladek’s relationships where the women are dependent on Vladek. The main female characters also have less depth compared to the main male characters, and can be more easily reduced down to “wife” or “mother”. In this book we get to see through the perspective of Art and his father, but never a female character. The female characters’ main purpose is to offer insight into the perception of a male character or a situation. This occurs with Françoise, we do not see much of her in the story, but when we do she is used to tell the reader how Art feels about his relationship with his father.…
