“A Beautiful Mind” is based on the true story of John Forbes Nash. Nash was a brilliant mathematician who won a Nobel prize for his study of mathematics. In the movie John Forbes Nash; who was portrayed by Russel Crowe, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. At the beginning of the film John Forbes Nash starts his career at Princeton University as a mathematics student where he was well known for his intelligence. Nash is an arrogant, awkward socially-inept mathematics student, who spent most of his time making an effort to discover a revolutionary equation in mathematics. As the movie develops we learn that Nash does not have a full grip on reality. About half of the places and situations that occur in the film are only illusions within Nash’s mind. In the movie John Forbes Nash has encounters with three different characters whom are all illusions of his “beautiful mind”. Throughout the movie Nash continues to have many delusions all while trying his best to lead a “normal” life. In fact, Nash is very much unaware that he suffers from schizophrenia until he was diagnosed and even began to take medication. But the impacts of his mental illness takes a dramatic effect on his life, and he decides to stop taking his medication, causing him to go back into his deep delusions. During one of his encounters Nash goes as far as to slit his wrist looking for an imagined implant. Nash’s delusions even try to convince him to kill his wife. This is where Nash wakes up from his hallucinations and starts thinking critically about his illness. Then he gets back to the hospital again and signs commitment papers to stay and receive
