Wall street closed down. The economy crashed. Americans feared air travel. Over 2,000 lives were lost. All of these were outcomes of the attacks made against the United States of America on September the 11th, 2001. The events of September 11th were carried out by members of the terrorist group Al Queda. The terrorists, lead by Osama Bin Laden, had taken control of four flights: departing from Boston, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. The terrorists killed the flights' pilots in order to gain full control of the aircrafts. At 8:56 AM, the first plane flew into the World Trade Center's north tower, leaving a hole in the building and setting the building on fire. Almost immediately, The Federal Aviation Administration banned all aircrafts over US airspace. By 12:15, the entire airspace over the US was cleared of more than 4,500 aircrafts. All planes were safely landed, however many far away from their intended destinations. Airspace was not opened until the 13th of September, two days later (Lerner). The closing of US airspace had only happened once before in US history. In addition to the shutting down of US airspace, many important places located in the United States closed down out of fear that they too, would be targeted by the terrorist group. NASA centers, New York public schools, Disney parks, the New York Stock Exchange, the UN building, universities in New York, baseball games, Nasdaq, and many more were closed following the events of 9/11 ("Attacks Prompt Widespread Closings"). There was grave concern about the safety of the government, which resulted in the evacuation of The White House and Congress. President George W. Bush had spent the remainder of September 11th, 2001 being shuttled around the country due to security concerns. He finally returned to the White House at 7 p.m. At 9 p.m, he delivered a televised address declaring, “terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America.
