5 Fun Facts About Penguins
Long black and white body. Small head with an orange bill. Short legs and feet. Wings that are only good for swimming. Penguins are one of the only birds that swim but don’t fly. Just because they are one of the most popular birds doesn’t mean that people know all of these 7 facts.
1. What an interesting body shape.
Even though penguins are birds they can swim. Their body’s have adapted to swimming. Penguins have large heads followed by a short neck. At the bottom of their body they have a little wedged shaped tail. Next to their tails are small their feet. Penguins feet are very close to together that why they waddle. Heir feet are also webbed for swimming. Penguins legs and feet are set far back on body and that’s why they have their upright posture.
2. They have very unique heads.
Most penguins are recognized by their heads. Penguins have different facial markings and different types of bills depending on their species. Penguins catch their food with their bill. Penguins bills are usually long and thin. Penguins usually have brown golden or reddish eyes. Like other birds, penguins have a nictitating membrane. Sometimes this could be called the third eyelid. Molting is essential for penguins because their feathers wear out. When they molt new feathers start to push the old feathers out. When the new feather is completely in the old one falls out.
