10 Things I Hate About You Analysis

Women have been underrepresented in nearly every aspect of life such as in film where men dominate in and off screen. Some advancements have undeniably been made towards representing women more in film, but when women are portrayed more in film they are usually portrayed in stereotypical ways. The film industry should do a better job at incorporating more female leads and roles into film because it helps break gender stereotypes, it helps show the true multidimensional character of women and helps with the representation of women opposed to their constant underrepresentation. Amelie (2001) directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) directed by Gil Junger were two films that incorporated a strong female lead which consequently created a better representation and understanding of women. Amelie was produced by Claudie Ossard, Arne Meerkamp van Embden, and Jean-Marc Deschamps which shows how men have more of the power in films both on and off screen. 10 …show more content…
Women have had much more obstacles in their way trying to make sure that they don’t deviate from their gender stereotypes and society’s expectations of women. However, as hard as it has been, women have made some progress in gaining representation. More women have been given the opportunities of having a strong female lead in films such as in Amelie and 10 Things I Hate about You. Yet there is so much work to still get done in terms of truly representing the multi-dimensional and versatile character that is a woman. The film industry has to start incorporating more female leads and roles in films in order to break down gender stereotypes, help show the multi-dimensional character of women, and to bring the representation of women that has been seriously lacking. Women deserve to have the same opportunities as men, and incorporating more women in film is one step in the right
