This objective was accomplished when the researchers synthesized esters of raspberry, banana and peach through reacting indicated alcohols and carboxylic acids in the presence of an acid catalyst in a round bottom flask and reflux condenser. This enabled the researchers to synthesize the following esters: pentan-2-yl acetate, benzyl acetate, butan-2-yl methanoate. The researchers, however, were unable to purify the said crude product due to the instructions given to them by their instructor. Therefore, the main objective of the experiment was observed, while the purification of the crude esters through simple distillation was not. The yield at the end of the experiment was not 100% percent due to certain factors in the natural process of synthesis and the technical failures within the experiment. Because of this, future researchers are advised to add smaller amounts of NaHCO3 to avoid clogging of the separatory funnel. Also the product must be fully stratified, with only the organic and aqueous layer visible, before separation of these. In addition, all of the procedures should be followed to facilitate a smooth flow of the experiment and the results and yields would be favorable. Also more time should be allotted for this experiment to have more favorable …show more content…

Appendix A Answers to Questions 1. Le Chatelier’s Principle states that if a dynamic equilibrium is disturbed by changing the conditions, the position of the equilibrium moves to counteract the change. At equilibrium point, a substantial amount of ester, alcohol, water and carboxylic acid was present in the round bottom flask. So to ensure a reasonable yield of the ester, an excess of the alcohols (2-pentanol, 2-butanol and benzyl alcohol) was used to drive the reaction faster. Acetic acid was used as the limiting reagent. The alcohol was used in excess. The researchers suggest removal of water via azeotropic

Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to understand acid-catalyzed hydration of alkenes through the formation of exo-norborneol from the reaction of Norborene with acid and the excess of water. Acid-catalyzed hydration is useful in removing double and triple bonds; an unsaturated compound becomes reduced to a saturated compound in the presence of the acid catalyst, or water for this experiment. Hydration of alkenes is the result of acid-catalyzed addition of water to a carbon-carbon double bond. This leads to the formation of an alcohol.…

Then, the sodium bicarbonate deprotonates the oxygen, which makes the oxygen neutral and forms pinacolone as the product. A technique that was used in this experiment was a distillation, which is a method for separating mixtures, in this case, based on boiling points. Since the components used (water and pinacol solution) are immiscible, each component acts independently, the boiling point of the mixture should be below the boiling point of the lowest boiling component.2 The boiling point of water is 100C while the boiling point of pinacol is 106C, so the distillation was stopped at 100C. An aqueous layer and a pinacolone layer are formed. The bottom layer is the aqueous layer because the density of pinacolone is 0.801 g/mL while…

The instructor added 12 mL of ether after the reaction changed colors clear to dark brown. The reaction was left to react for 30 minutes. During this time, 2.3 mL of methyl benzoate was obtained in a graduated cylinder and…

Purpose: The purpose of this laboratory was to synthesize isopentyl acetate, commonly known as banana oil, in a reaction of methanol and isopentyl alcohol catalyzed by sulfuric acid. Through this Fischer esterification reaction, it was possible to learn about using a Reflux condenser to run a reaction as well as purifying the product through various washes and extractions along with simple distillation. In addition, the product of the experiment was carefully analyzed based upon boiling point, physical characteristics, IR and 1H NMR. The overall objective was to successfully isolate the product of isopentyl acetate and observe the purity of this product.…

Subject: Experiment 23: Stereochemistry of the Addition of Bromine to trans-Cinnamic Acid Introduction/Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to carry out the bromination of trans-cinnamic acid, to determine the stereochemistry of the dibromide product of 2,3-dibromo-3-phenylpropanoic acid, and find out whether the reaction proceeds by the usual bromonium ion mechanism or some other mechanism. In this experiment trans-cinnamic acid was mixed with glacial acetic acid and stirred in which then bromine/acetic acid solution was added to the mixture little by little. The dibromide becomes the precipitate of this solution during the reaction. Once this precipitate is separated by vacuum filtration the melting point helps identify…

Introductions: The purpose of this experiment is to synthesize acetaminophen and esters in order to apply the process of retrosynthetic analysis to determine the unknown alcohols used to produce the esters. Acetaminophen, a popular active ingredient in many over-the-counter drugs, is used as a pain reliever and a fever reducer. It is synthesized from the reaction between a carboxylic acid and an amine; thus, acetaminophen contains hydroxyl and amide functional groups.1 C6H7NO + C4H6O3 C8H9NO2 + C2H4O2 This reaction is commonly known as a condensation reaction.…

Experiment 5 Synthesis and NMR Spectroscopy of ethyl cinnamate Introduction: Wittig reactions involve the stereoselective synthesis of olefins from phosphonium ylides and aldehydes or ketones, where the carbonyl bond is converted to an alkene double bond.1 The variety of suitable reagents and the relatively mild experimental conditions facilitate their industrial applications, such as the synthesis of epoxides, esters, carotenoids and vitamin A.2,3 Specifically, the ester ethyl cinnamate is used as a flavouring agent and in perfumes. The diastereomers of the alkene are distinguished through Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, where the coupling constants of alkenyl protons are different for (E) and (Z) isomers.4…

One important aspect of organic chemistry is the synthesis of new compounds. It is also important for chemists to understand how to perform certain techniques, such as extraction and distillation, to produce the new products, which are usually drugs and cures for illnesses. In this experiment, n-butyl bromide was produced. n-Butyl bromide is an alkyl halide, which are usually synthesized by an alcohol and an acid. In the case of n-butyl bromide, n-butyl alcohol was used along with sodium bromide and sulfuric acid.…
