The Scream by Edvard Munch is an iconic painting in today’s time, much like the Mona Lisa has been in the past. Munch found his inspiration for this piece of art from an actual place located on a hill in Norway and at the bottom of the hill was the madhouse where Munch’s sister was kept. What catches your eyes in this photo is the person is standing there shrieking, mouth wide open, with a hand on both sides of their face. Once you look beyond the person you notice two silhouettes who appear to be men and a city far off in the distance. The painting swirls together in shades of orange, blue, yellow and black as the scream leaves the person mouth and goes out into the…

From the sky to the water to the bridge where the man appears to be standing, each brush stroke is distinct from the next. The brush strokes that Munch chose to use also…

His iconic painting “The Scream” (Image 1) with its exaggerated colors and distorted shapes amplify anxiety and alienation and is the perfect example of Expressionist art. Munch in his tormented “scream” is reacting to the anxieties associated with the modern changing world. In true Expressionist style the elements are exaggerated, distorted, vivid and jarring. The palette is limited and Munch uses intense colour with agitated brushstrokes. Munch’s inner emotional turmoil is conveyed by the…

American Pastoral, a book painting a vibrant picture of American ideals revealed over time to be unattainable, ends its tragic story with some of the most contradictory elements possible: a scream, a laugh, and finally, a question. The scream takes place at the dinner party, uttered by Lou Levov, who has been in the kitchen of Swede’s house doing his awkward best to stop the inebriated Jessie Orcutt from, in his view, making a complete fool of herself. Distressed by his arrogance, she stabs him…

create relationships between the observer and between physical pieces of the work. This ability is used to manipulate the sight of the viewer. As said by Edgar Degas “Art is not what you see but what you make others see.” The intended outcome or reaction isn’t always what’s received.
