Chillingsworth is indifferient towards Hester regarding her adultery. He says he knew that she never loved him in the first place. He also says he wronged her first by stealing her youth by making her marry him.
What does Chillingworth intend to do and why?
He intends to find out who the father of Hester's child is and he says he will not reveal the name to the rest of the town. He says that the father of the child has wronged them both.
What does Chillingworth ask Hester to promise? Why does she agree?
He asks her to promise to not tell anyone his true identity because he says it will dishonor him to be the husband of a faithless woman.
What is foreshadowed by Chillingworth and Hester’s exchange at the end of the chapter?
Hester asks Chillingsworth if their bond will ruin her soul. He says that it will not ruin her soul but someone elses. This is foreshadowing the ruin of the father's soul.
