Goods and services of tropical rainforests
Goods: 80% of fruits and vegetables such as citrus fruits come from there. Rubber from rubber trees. 120 drugs from plant derived sources. Of the 3000 plants identified by US National Cancer Institute, 70% come from rainforests.
Services: Regulates climate due to high temp and rain patterns. Regulates CO2 and O2. Water purification. Composting.
3 direct roles in rainforest destruction
DIRECT:
Deforestation: Since 1970, 20% of amazon been destroyed for cattle and soy bean farming. Trans amazonian highway etc.
Mining: Carajas Mine owned by large TNC called VALE. Mine gold copper nickel.
Conversion: to agricultural land. 90% of deforested land is for cattle pasture. Brazil is 2nd highest producer of biodiesel and to feel animal.
INDIRECT
Pollution: Mercury pollutes in gold extraction. Found in 90% of fish in Tapajos River.
Climate Change: Warmer and drier rainforests. Lots of species will die and plants destroyed. Loss of soils and decreased agriculture. 2005 and 10 worst drought ever.
Biosphere Conservation
Global: CITES signed 1975. Protects 35k species. Ensures trade in specimens of wild animals aren't threatening endangerment. Illegal to trade elephant tusks.
National: 15 parks in UK conserve 22k km2 of natural beauty
