- slavery is a type of forced labour where a person is considered the legal property of another
- it was an accepted part of society up until the 19th century
- the translantic slave trade operated from the 17th - 19th century
- in the 19th century abolonist groups in Europe and America argued that slavery violated a person's rights and it was also criticised by Christians
- Britian passed the slavery abolition act 1833 (UK) to officially slavery in the colonies
- after ww2 the United Nations signed the UDHR in which article 4 states that: "no one shall be held in slavery"

Universal Education
- the right of all people to a basic education
- most countries pushed for this in the 1800's
- in Europe the church took the role of educator from the 16th - 17th century
- Australia passed various acts in the 1870's to makes education free and compulsory for all
- article 26 of the UDHR states that: "everyone has the right to education"

- adopted in 1948
- contains 30 articles
- has become an enduring statement influencing over 200 international treaties, constitutions, declarations and bills of Rights over the past 50 years
- the number of NGOs has grown exponentially over the last century

International covenant on civil and political rights
- Drafted in 1966 and came into force in 1976
- creates an obligation on state parties to respect civil and political rights of individuals
- equality between men and women, right to life, right to vote
- member states must sign and ratify, make periodic reports and be compliant
- Monitored by the Human Rights committee
