What are the ethical, social and economical implications of the mother as a primary care giver?
1. From April 2015 parents have 'shared parental leave'. This means that the mother and father can split the 52 week entitlement.
2. In March 2014, the Family and Childcare Trust calculated that on average sending an infant to nursery full-time costs £9850.
3. The government offers a scheme allows parents to claim benefits.
What is the first pro of the mother as primary care giver?
1. The first advantage is breast feeding.
2. The NHS recommends breast feeding for 6 months, this is because it protects the infant from infections and diseases and provides a better bond between the mother and baby.
3. This means the mother has to be constantly present (every 2 hours) making her the primary care giver and the father only a supporting care giver.
What was Freud's view on the importance of the mother?
1. Freud the mother-infant relationship as most important as the first stage of the psychosexual development is the oral stage.
2. The libido therefore needs to be satisfied by breast feeding.
3. Overindulgence or frustration can lead to neediness or pessimism.
4. Freud also claimed that separation anxiety happens when children are left alone.
What is the third advantage of the mother as a primary care giver?
1. John Bowlby (1944) showed that separation from the mother causes lasting emotional damage.
2. This lead Bowlby to develop the maternal deprivation hypothesis.
3. He went on in 1969 to name the emotional bond with a particular person - monotropy.
Why are mother better equipped for parenting?
1. Because of the hormone oestrogen means that females are more orientated towards emotional relationships.
2. Sex stereotypes define caring and sensitivity as feminine traits and therefore mothers are more likely to look after children.
3. Frodi et al. (1978) - observed that both mothers and fathers had the same reaction to a video of infants crying.

1. Behaviourists in the 1950s suggested that infants were classically conditioned to assassinate the sense of pleasure: food, with the mother.
2. Harry Harlow (1959) - showed that food does not equal love, by placing monkeys with a cloth mother and wire mother (with a feeder), however, the monkeys found more comfort with the cloth mother.
How are Freud's views irrelevant and disagree with the mother as a primary care giver?
1. Freud's views on society and sex roles are outdated as culture has changed.
2. Freud also pointed out the importance of a father in development through the Oedipus complex.
How did Bowlby's research disagree with the mother as a primary care giver?
1. Bowlby stated in the maternal deprivation theory that the bond does not have to necessarily be with the mother.
2. Bowlby also found that some children were unaffected by separation.
