Yvon started getting into the business by making chrome molybdenum steel pitons which he made out of reusable hardware. By 1970 Chouinard Equipment was the biggest supplier of climbing tools and hardware in the nation.

Wearing a multicolored striped rugby shirt that would protect his arms and neck Yvon set out to climb in Scotland. People went crazy over Yvon’s shirt and wanted to wear brightly colored high quality shirts to climb in as well. Yvon started ordering clothing through the company and within a few months shirts, gloves, and hats were being sold and re-ordered by popular demand.
