With no time to waste, the film forwards ahead to 16 months later where Kate can no longer care for herself and is forced to have her husband, Evan, care for her in all aspects. Evan is adamant on Kate receiving the utmost reliable caretaker but Kate has something else in mind. Bec, played by Emmy Rossum is a promiscuous, alcoholic college student with no priorities or future plans. For reasons unknown, Kate hires Bec to be her caretaker with no previous experience, even though it is against her husband’s desires. Bec shows up late everyday, causes messes in the kitchen when cooking, and can hardly perform bathing or aiding Kate in going to the restroom. Overtime, Evan becomes more distant and is caught having an affair with a coworker leaving Kate hopeless in their marriage and forcing him to move out. Though Kate beats herself up over the loss of someone she still loves, Bec becomes her primary advocate caring not only for Kate physically but rather emotionally.
