MW 1:00 vandrews@uwm.edu Yoga Philosophy Paper
Before taking this class, I had no idea about yoga. While in this class I have learned so much about the art and science of yoga, as well as my self. Something I learned is that yoga has eight limbs. I focus on practicing asanas in this class. I also am learning about the second limb, which is niyama’s. These are personal guidelines in yoga that I follow when I practice the art. There are five different niyama’s that I am learning and practicing this semester. Sauca is one of the five niyama’s and it basically means organization, and inner and outer cleanliness. I think this particular niyama helps me focus and really get the full effect out of each of my poses. …show more content…
I also use this niyama in my everyday life in school. I am in the process of applying to nursing school so it is very important that I am organized in all my course work to prepare me for nursing school. Some ways that I use to sauca in my schoolwork is to make lists and keep a planner with all my important dates and things to do so I can stay organized and stress free. Santosa is another niyama that is defined as cultivate contentment, mental equanimity, and composure. When I practice yoga, I use santosa in many of my poses including Tadasana, Sukhasana, and Savasana 1. All of these poses give me contentment and mental equanimity. I practice these poses at the start of my yoga practice, throughout my practice, and I also end with one of these poses. I think that simple poses like these really help me center my self and let my body take in all that I have been practicing. Santosa also helps me in everyday life because I feel a sense of contentment when I feel like I have control over my life. I am very busy in my classes and life, and when I make checklists of everything I need to get done and can complete them, I feel content. When I get really stressed or have a …show more content…
Being in a calm state and having control over my life is what I see composure as. I feel that using santosa really helps me not only in my yoga practice, but my everyday life and goal setting. Santosa reminds me to re center myself when I’m feeling lost or overwhelmed and take back control over my life, and that is important because I am going to nursing school which can cause a lot of stress and loss of control over ones life. Another niyama that I have learned while practicing yoga is tapas. Tapas are defined as a burning effort, intense practice and applications. I apply tapas in my schoolwork because nursing school is intense and my studying and work needs to be at that level. I am really focused and driven to do my best in all of my course work through out nursing school. A pose that I use tapas is Virabhadrasana II, which in English means warrior two pose. While I practice this pose I feel a burn in my leg and one might think, “Ouch this hurts, why am I doing this?” I realize that I am focus intensely and the pain I feel is heat and is good for in mastering my pose(Mehta.) The more I practice the
