Writing A Futile Essay In High School

Decent Essays
When I first entered high school, I thought that essays were used to summarize, argue, or explain. It seemed an unwelcome task to complete a futile essay. However, when I began writing in my first high school english class - freshman composition- I learned that an essay is meant to be an opportunity to explore and test novel ideas. The term essay comes from the Middle French word essai, which means a trial or attempt. As I continued taking writing classes throughout my high school experience, I understood that an essay is just that — a window for writers to attempt new techniques while also exploring fresh ideas about literature, policy, and the sorts. Luckily for me, I was the student of a teacher who encouraged creativity and originality

Readers want to see how your research stimulates your own thinking” (162). Without learning how to write exploratively, students will not only score more poorly with professors, but also fail to use their essays to think through the problem. In the beginning of chapter 7, Allyn and Bacon goes over how to write and understand exploratory essays. First comes the generating of ideas, then posing the problem, formulating a starting point, research notes, shaping and…

An essay is a powerful tool to broadcast personal thought and deliver opinions from writer to readers. Shall we generate an ideal framework in literature education for the students to help them write a “perfect” essay? A Grant MacEwan award-winning novelist, Fred Stenson, published the article “In Search of a Modest Proposal” in 2004 on Alberta Views, in which he argued that current curriculum of literature education diminish the creativity and personality of students. The author initiated his argument with ethos using his expertise in writing, raised his concerns with pathos from his own daughter’s experience, and emphasized his thesis with logos by analyzing another famous satirist’s masterpiece. As a writer, Stenson humbly emphasized his credibility in his area of expertise, as essay writing is “a topic about which I knew something”.…

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Since our first attempt at writing an essay in elementary to middle school, we are told the main components to writing an essay is the ‘beginning’, ‘middle’, and ‘end.’ All of which holds true today, but as we move from one grade to the next, the standards for a ‘good’ essay changes for the better. Rhetorical strategies, devices, and appeals also known as rhetoric, is what we learn in high school (Stotsky 10). The continuation of the expanding knowledge is what makes us alter our writing strategies, from the material taught to us in our adolescent years of elementary school and every year thereafter. It is in high school that we are taught to analyze and dissect the author, as well as the author’s work ceaselessly.…

    Mike Bunn Argument Essay

After reading Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer,” I revisited my directed self-placement essay while asking myself the many questions Bunn recommends to ask oneself when “reading like a writer.” In doing so, I was able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses I possess as a writer, and therefore know where I need to grow the most as a writer. One of my greatest strengths as a writer is knowing my audience and composing my writing accordingly. I am aware that when my audience is a teacher who will be reading and grading plenty of the same essays to include original ideas and arguments; it gets boring reading the same type of paper and ideas over and over. Along with my well thought out ideas and arguments, I also credit myself with the ability of using appropriate evidence from credible sources that support my claims.…

Chapter 28 in The Norton Introduction to Literature talks about the elements of an essay. An essay is a short written assignment that develops and supports and idea that the essay is written about. Each essay has a reason for being written. Essays about arguments are meant to convince someone of their view point, while an essay about analysis is supposed to breakdown and explain something to the reader. Essays should include four things: a thesis, structure, evidence, and tone.…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

My English professor made me write a minimum of five pages for an essay and I never wrote over three pages since high school. This course was a challenge for me, but it also taught me the value to writing. The more papers I wrote in college made my views change on writing. Writing became a secondary voice for me, it wasn’t difficult for me to write about what I knew or either what was near and dear to my heart. Although I respect writing, it is still something that I still struggle with till this day.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

Writing prompt: a recipe for an unimaginative essay. I wrote a good amount of essays in secondary school. I felt stuck when my teachers gave me writing prompts because they rarely aligned with my interests. I am a firm believer that humans are inclined to succeed when they do something they are interested in; usually writing prompts relate to some dull, mundane topic, which hinders ingenuity and excitement. If the author is not enthusiastic about his or her topic, the work is unsatisfactory.…
