Question: What happens when you have a stroke?
First of all, what is a stroke? A stroke is when blood vessels to the brain are disrupted. It can either be a blockage which is made of fatty tissue which causes a blood clot (which 85% of strokes are) or a bleed in the vessel (15% of them are). The cut off blood flow causes damaged brain cells which can cause different symptoms depending which part of the brain is affected.
The blood vessels clots or the tears can be located in the brain, neck, heart. If the clot is spotted quickly, the clot can be removed with a clot-busting medication called thrombolysis to dissolve the clot to return blood flow before the vessel bursts. If they can't use this medication them they would be treated …show more content…
So to answer my question, what happens when you get a stroke? It’s sorted into the two types of strokes, ischemic stroke, which is when you get a clot which stops blood flow in the vessel, and a hemorrhagic stroke, which is when there is bleeding in the brain.
For the ischemic stroke, when the brain is without oxygen for 4 minutes, that's when the brain cells start getting damaged or dying, which is when symptoms will show. Other blood vessels around it will become bigger to hold more blood to try stopping the problem from getting worse. If you can't get the hospital fast enough more brain cells will start dying which will make the body parts control by the affected brain cells will lose function. Depending where the affected part of the brain is, the damage may be permanent or can be fixed, if you can restore blood flow quickly then you have a higher chance of less physical damage or life threatening
