On top of being very irresponsible young adults, teenagers don’t have enough driving experience by the age of sixteen and a half to be driving on their own. Insurance companies don’t decrease their rates for young drivers till they are in their twenties. Why is this? I personally believe that it’s because motor-vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death for teens and a vast majority of those accidents are the teen’s fault.
Lastly, teenage drivers of today are much different compared teenage drivers thirty years ago. They are the teenagers of the twenty-first century. We have grown up with technology, the most dangerous being cell phones. Cell phones have been the cause of one in four accidents in the United States and are six times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk. In 2013, ten percent of all drivers’ ages fifteen to nineteen involved in fatal accidents were reported to be distracted at the time of the crash.
In conclusion, I believe that the legal driving age should be raised to protect young adults and the future of America. In hopes that with the age being raised we will have more responsible and experienced drivers, that won’t be concerned with checking their phones while
