Why Is George Important In Of Mice And Men

Anybody can drive a story to a different place or direction. In the book Of Mice and Men, George is the one that drives the story to its future outcome because Lennie waits for George's approval on everything. George usually knows what should and should not be done when talking about decision making. Lennie has a mental disability which causes him to not always make the best choices and to understand everything. George gets along with people better than Lennie does. Lennie waits for George’s approval because George knows what should and should not be done. In chapter one, George is clarifying to Lennie how to act appropriately on their new job at the ranch. George states “We’re gonna go in an’ see the boss. Now, look--I’ll give him the work tickets, but you ain’t gonna say a word” (Steinback 6). George knows that having Lennie not saying a word is a good decision because George is afraid that if the boss finds out about Lennie’s past and how they got kicked out of Weed, then he won’t give them the job. When Lennie is not sure what he is supposed to do, he looks up to George a lot because he gets nervous that he is going to do something wrong. If Lennie makes a big mistake then George takes away Lennie’s dream, the privilege of tending the rabbits when they accomplish their plan after working on the ranch for a while. George knows what is best for both him and Lennie, which is why he makes almost all the decisions. George has been a partner to Lennie for a long time now and he knows Lennie’s strengths and weaknesses. Lennie has a mental disability which keeps him from understanding common sense and making the best decisions. In chapter three, George is talking to Slim and telling him what Lennie had done to get them kicked out of Weed. All Lennie wants to do is feel the texture of different objects. And when Lennie came across a girl in a red dress and the only thought that was on his mind was getting to feel that red dress. Lennie can always count on George, that is why he looks up to him. In Chapter four, Crooks was minding his own business in his room when Lennie walked in. Lennie seemed bored because most of the other guys, including George, went out to get a drink. Crooks at first was trying to get Lennie to leave, but after his failed attempts, Crooks tried to start some conversations. He kept saying “S’pose George don’t come back no more. S’pose he took a powder and just ain’t coming back. What’ll you do then.” ‘George wouldn’t do nothing like that. I been with George a long time. He’ll come back tonight----’ (Steinback 71) Lennie would cry. Crooks had no right to say what he said to Lennie. Maybe he was just wondering but it sure gave Lennie a scare. Lennie has a lot of trust in George because George has never let him down before. George looks out for Lennie. Sometimes Lennie may get on his nerves but George has always been there for Lennie and Lennie knows that. Lennie looks to George, to his permission, to his actions because he can trust
