Why I Want To Read

What we enjoy as a child shapes who we become. For example, what we read as a kid might affect what we like to read today. Or for some people, it could be completely different. It is fascinating to see how your interests change throughout the years. By thinking back through the years about the types of books you have read, you can see what got you where you are today. When I was really young, my parents would always read to me; even when I couldn’t understand what was going on. They continued to read to me up to the ages of picture books and pop-up books. After a while, I eventually learned to read by myself, with much help from my parents. Once I learned, I wanted to read all the time. During this time I read lots of books by Dr. Seuss, such as Green Eggs and Ham, and Oh the Places You’ll Go. When I was in 1st and 2nd grade I started reading small chapter books, and my favorites were Junie B Jones and Judy Moody. Throughout elementary school, my reading level got much higher and I advanced in my interests. A little later on, I immensely enjoyed Nancy Drew and loved to see the way the mysteries played out. The one I think is the best is Thirteen Reasons Why which is about a boy who receives a box of tapes from a girl who committed suicide a few weeks earlier. On each tape, she gives thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life, and he is one of them. It’s really interesting to see how the things you do can affect another person’s life, no matter how insignificant you may think it is. Another good book is Panic, which is about taking risks and getting out of your comfort zone to do something greater for yourself. It opened me up to new possibilities and inspired me to live my best life. Others I have read include the Red Queen and the Trials of Apollo series, which for both I am currently waiting for the next book in the series to be

Unlike the literature I am required to read during the school year, the books that I read for pleasure are more focused on issues that can relate to one's actual life. The books I read for pleasure are more of a release. For example, I read "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel to get a better view on the idea of intangible belief and dry factuality. I enjoyed "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury because it provided a new perspective on the idea of censorship. I also read "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Of Mice and Men" in order to receive valuable insight on the idea of loss of innocence.…

A white scalloped shelf in the corner for as long as I can remember holds all the books I’ve ever read. From books I learned to read with to the ones my mom has tried to get me to read for years. Over the past fourteen years my taste in books has evolved from Daisy Meadows fairy stories, to young adult books, to ones with more serious and realistic topics. Ever since I read my first Dr. Seuss book aloud in class, I have loved reading. I would spend hours in my room reading then march downstairs to let everyone marvel at what a smart young girl I was.…

The first novel that opened the door into the world of fantasy and true imagination through literature for me was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis. The pages transported me to another world, as though I was stepping through Narnia alongside the characters. The storyline was magical and entertaining for a young girl, creating a place for my mind to wander and explore. Narnia and the characters became a sense of comfort and curiosity through each chapter, as I was beginning to truly see the beauty in imagination.…

My favorite piece of literature is The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins. I first read this series of books in middle school and it was one of the first times that books really grabbed my attention while reading. Suzanne Collins’s writing style made you feel as if you were there along with Katniss and feeling all of the emotions she felt. The was a wide variety of thought and feelings discovered by Katniss as the story progressed. When there was a death in the story or love between two of the characters, the writing drew you in and had you wanting more.…

Also, my attention span when reading books can easily get interrupted. The first time I was interested in books was when I first started reading The Harry Potter Series. This was sometime in elementary school. The books were quite advanced for my age; however, my grandmother was my source of help. She became my educator throughout elementary whenever I needed help with literature work outside of school.…

Last year; my sophomore year, around April I started reading “Crank” by Ellen Hopkins. I only got somewhere around the 100th page and then stopped reading, because I was so distracted by school work, and reading books for school, we read a book in class called “Looking for Alaska”, I really liked it, and was slowly getting interested in reading. When school ended for the summer, I had to take summer school and for my English class I had to read a book and give a presentation over it. I have not been able to read a book cover to cover that I have chosen in almost two years, but in my summer school English class I read “The Story of My Life” By Helen Keller, and read the full book within a few weeks.…

I love to read because… I love to read because of the astonishing or villainous characters. Another reason that I think reading is fun is because it's a total boredom buster. Reading is great because it helps me escape from the stressful, mean world. I read every night for the action and adventure involved. I love to read because it gives me a reason to buy weird random merchandise like pygmy puffs from Harry Potter.…

The teacher I had was kind, funny, and she would read us books all the time. Up to that point, I had never had a teacher who made reading so much fun. She would read us these books that as a kid I found fascinating and riveting. There was one particular book that she read that I really enjoyed, it was called “Hank the Cowdog” and it was about a brown dog that was the sheriff of a farm and would solve any crime done on the farm, I mean what kid wouldn’t love that story. To top it all of she would read it in what presumably was the “Hank the Cowdog” voice.…

The first book I decided to choose was Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat. When reading or studying children’s literature any one of Dr. Seuss’ books are a must read. When looking back on my childhood, I am not sure it would have been the same without any of his books. Each one of his books are very prominent in my memory. Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat offered children a zany story, inspired world play, and a glimpse of a fantasy world that was outside of adult control.…

Reading Memoir John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, stated,” Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.” Actually, reading books helps me to explore the world. When I was just a little girl, I loved reading fairy tales which brought me to many vicarious thrilling adventures, and when growing up, non-fiction books taught me how to become a good person. Besides that, reading has brought me to many various levels of emotions, such as joy, love, hate, fear, and sorrow. Some stories not only make me feel euphoric with happy endings, but they also make me feel despondent when a character’s deep sorrow touched my heart.…
