Why I Want To Pursue My Bachelor's Degree

Improved Essays
For as long as I can remember, I have had a burning desire to earn my bachelor’s degree, a goal which has been set for countless years. My future goal is to complete my bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in math and English, with the ultimate goal to teach algebra at any level between the seventh and tenth grades. My eighth grade algebra teacher helped me achieve an understanding of algebra that I never knew existed, instilling in me a desire to pass on an understanding of and an excitement for math to my future students. In my opinion, a teacher can share various techniques and methods in teaching algebra which will assist students in developing, in the least, a tolerance for a subject that is viewed to many as unnecessary. After recently beginning college for the first time in nine years, I find that I am faced with numerous fears and concerns that a returning, older student may have. Time management is one of the major issues facing me at this time. I find myself becoming overwhelmed after a twelve hour work day, returning to my home and family responsibilities, and then going straight to work on my online and regular classes. Allotting time for reading and reflection, beginning the online studies …show more content…
I continue to find ways to cope with this new adventure I have set out to accomplish; however, I need to constantly focus on the main goal and take one day at a time, devoting the time and energy into what is required and expected. Over time, even though it seems difficult now, I will develop even more skills which will only enhance this whole experience. In the end, through all the preparations, blood, sweat, and tears, everything will be totally worth wearing that cap and gown and watching my family, when first and foremost, my husband and my daughter, see me excel in what I believed would be impossible to finally

Time management is always something that I’ve had trouble with; I either save all of the tasks I have to get done until the very last minute, or I work on too many tasks at once, which pushes the time I take to complete everything back even farther. Even though I have gotten to where I am now with these less-than-average time management skills, these skills will not fly once I am out of college and flung into the working world. Whether I am working under an independent company or attempting to start my own business, nothing important will get done when needed, and I will just be creating more and more stress for myself. And, given that I have had struggles with anxiety, this is not a great picture that I am painting. So, time management is an important thing for me to better myself…

Hi Jaunita! Like you, learning to manage my time seems most challenging. It appears when I believe I have a schedule all planned out there is some task given that has to be done “right away” that often sets me back. It appears to be a never ending cycle, but learning to cope with these setbacks and having a go too back up plan helps.…

My experiences in SCI 195A this semester taught by Ingrid Peterson and Dina Schwartz have been nothing less than extraordinary. Being a first semester freshman at a top university, such as the University of Arizona, is a tremendous culture shock even coming from a nationally ranked college preparatory school as I did. Although college is full of opportunity, it entails legions of work! College certainly includes more responsibility such as time management, test taking strategy, and planning for the future. Each of these values (and more) were passed onto me this semester by Ingrid and Dina.…

Managing time can be a big obstacle when you have tendency to say yes to most everything a person ask you to do for them. Saying yes has got me into trouble with managing my time and having too much on my plate. But, I think that if I make a list of priorities, make an action plan according to my priorities, and having an accountability partner can help the obstacle of time management become less. One other obstacle I see in the future is not volunteering and making my brand known. A solution to this would be updating my resume with volunteer work and find those people that can help get connections within my community.…

Is Algebra Worth the Work? Recently, I came across an editorial in the New York Times debating the reasoning behind requiring higher-level algebra in high school and college. Written by Andrew Hacker, a teacher at City University in New York since 1971, the article suggests that colleges and high schools shouldn’t actually require algebra in their everyday classes. On a personal note, I couldn’t agree more.…

A reason why I would want to go to college would because it would help get me to places I want to be in life such as helping me get a good paying job or th position I would want. Another reason why I want to go to college would also be because I want to see what it is like to attend a college and at least try it out. While in college I hope to work part time to earn some sort of income as well but if I am going to be working it is only going to be a short term job till I earn the degree I would need and land a job as either a preschool or daycare assistant. I chose to become a preschool teacher/ daycare assistant because I love working with kids and feel like I would have the things I would need to qualify me in becoming those things such…

Andrew Delbanco in his article “3 Reasons College Still Matters,” he points out the importance of getting a college degree by saying that citizens must think of the benefits that they are going to get after they graduate from college. He gives three benefits when students get a college degree, and these benefits are: economically, politically, and intellectually educated. It sounds good to have such benefits, but nowadays, with all the development in technology that we have and all the things that make our life so easy, we depend every day more on technology. Now people are enrolling at colleges and they are trying to get good grades, but the technology is creating a wall between leaning and scoring grades. The big problem now is not how can…

    Algebra For All

The move towards “Algebra for All” is based on the notion that success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competencies in the 21st century, require fluency in algebraic reasoning and problem solving. Although there is a great need for more students to join the STEM fields, few students pursue these fields in higher education. Scholars have proposed that algebraic thinking should be introduced in the early grades to make the transition to learning complex algebra easier (e.g., Blanton & Kaput, 2011; Cai & Knuth, 2011). Indeed, research has shown that it is possible for students in the earlier grades to engage in functional thinking (Warren, Cooper, & Lamb, 2006), and algebraic reasoning (Bjuland,…
