The end of World War 2, with the nuclear bombings of Japan, took Japan out of the running for world power. The US and Soviet Union, having no common enemy, turned on each other. This marked the start of the Cold War.
The Cold War was indeed an arms race between the US(NATO), and the USSR(Warsaw Pact), but there were many other things involved. The cold war was also a “fight” between two different forms of government (republic/democratic capitalism vs. socialistic/fascist states).
