Why Athletes Are Bad Role Models?

A role model can be defined as “a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people” (Collins English Dictionary). In my eyes, I believe being a role model is the job for the parents or other influential people that spend time with children and teenagers such as teachers or coaches. Unfortunately, some parents cannot accept the duty of being a role model for their children. In today’s society, the sport professionals are considered the role models when parents don’t take on the responsibility. Sometimes, they can be horrible role models with terrible attitudes and leadership characteristics. On the other hand, these athletes can be very great role models for boys and girls. I could name countless bad role models such as Johnny Manziel, Michael Vick, Aaron Hernandez, and Adam (Pacman) Jones. The only leadership these men have is work ethic, for they wouldn’t be where they are today without working for it. But, there is a different sense of leadership that one must have to be a role model. These men are known for their off field incidents with too much partying, or training and fighting dogs, killing an innocent person, or having many assault charges. If there is one thing I think a role model should emulate, it’s how to be a man or a lady outside of sports.
