Gender differences in illegal crossing: Are men more likely to take bigger risks than woman?

Introduction
Road crossing behaviour in areas where drivers don’t expect pedestrians to cross the street is a calculated risk taken by many people in an attempt to avoid walking a long distance or in order to get to their destination quickly. However, this unsafe behavior of people crossing a street where laws do not permit can lead to severe consequences. For example, in Romania in 2009 in terms of breaking the regulations among pedestrians 7 out of 10 incidents were caused by illegal crossing (Călinoiu, Minca, & Furtunescu, 2012).
In an effort to provide a greater understanding of pedestrian behaviour, in the data analysed in a research in 2008, scientists investigated the frequency of people from different age groups and different gender crossing where there is no crosswalk. Although there was no illegal crossing involved in this study, the data collected had interesting results as 37 females and 148 men crossed at an unmarked crosswalk (Mitman, Ragland, & Zegeer,2008). Could this data suggest that men are more likely to take risks than women or it is just because at the time the information was collected there were more men present?
