Once Romeo arrives at Friar Lawrence’s cell for the first time, he asks Friar Lawrence to marry himself to Juliet as he believes that she is his true love. Even though Friar Lawrence knows that the Capulets and the Montagues have a long lasting resentment towards each other, he agrees to marry Romeo to Juliet anyway, as he says, “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be, For this alliance may so happy prove To turn your households rancor into pure love,”. Although marrying Romeo to Juliet can bring about a truce among both of the families, there is more risk than reward. When the tragedy takes place during the end of the play, one of the causes of it was the controversy between the families, the marriage of Romeo and Juliet. Another reason to blame Friar Lawrence for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is the fact that he let himself marry the two lovers even though he acknowledged to himself that a tragic outcome is most probable.
