Signing a legal contract is the ultimate display of trust and loyalty because two individuals are tied as one in society. Marriage is an institution of trust and altruism that is fueled by love. It guarantees the bond between two people so that they can have children and establish their family to continue their legacy and family line. Although disconcerting, without law being involved, nothing is guaranteed in a married couple because one is able always “walk out” without legal consequences. Because marriage involves mutual sharing of financial properties and rights, it is a huge commitment of trust that requires extensive actions and repercussions (divorce) to revert it. Therefore, because of this nature of marriage, it can be seen as something that is confining and inflexible. Because it is a lifetime commitment, it has its downsides at times and may not be suitable for everyone because all humans are different. For example, marriage can be disadvantageous if one of the two individuals in a married couple is severely harmed by the bond. If the relationship is an abusive one, to have an available “exit” by not being married in the first place gives the person a sense of security. The general definition of marriage is a relationship between two people that is legally or formally recognized as a union. The question that arises from this interpretation is whether homosexual or same-sex marriage is also recognized and accepted. Currently, there is a major push for legalization of same-sex marriage in all of the United States because only 35 states have accepted it. There are many who are against same-sex marriage and they claim that it harms the development of children, it is biologically and naturally unacceptable, and most significantly it goes against religious beliefs. However, if marriage is an institution for people to legalize their interpersonal bond, because they are deeply in love with their partner, there is no rational reason to discriminate against homosexuals who share the same emotions. Therefore, marriage may not truly be a necessity. Homosexuals and heterosexuals alike should not rely and continue to follow a societal tradition that is not equally treating all people the same way but instead, find their own method that works for
