All teachers who have a program participant in their class will be asked to complete a teacher interview; these interviews will be recorded and later used to pull quotes from when presenting the outcomes report. PALS is a state-provided literacy screening tool that assesses a child’s literacy comprehension. It is currently used by 99% of Virginia school districts and is used for students in Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd grade. This data will be provided to BBBSHR by the mentee’s school upon entry of the program and again the following school year. The student’s core grade point average on a 4.0 scale will also be collected. It is comprised of individual grades in core classes such as language arts, math, science and social studies. These grades will be collected from the mentee’s school at enrollment and again at the end of the school year. It is important to note that the G.P.A collected at enrollment will be from the mentees previous school year. Finally, students will also be measured by their mentors using questions from the grade-level appropriate strength of relationship survey that pertain directly to the student’s reading ability. This questions are answered on a five-point Likert-Type scale.
Mentee 's attitudes towards reading will also be measured using appropriate instruments to be developed. The instrument will be an age-appropriate questionnaire about the mentee’s attitude as it relates to reading and reading activities.
