Christopher John Francis Boone is exceptional at mathematics, an especially descriptive writer, and a gifted “Minesweeper”. He is also autistic. For Christopher, the world can be an alarming place and people can be very confusing, especially when he can’t empathize with them. In a world full of people that can’t understand Christopher’s condition, he is prone to unpleasant situations or inadvertently hurting someone’s feelings. But, for a teen with autism, this can be especially difficult, creating numerous internal conflicts. Of course Christopher’s tendency to completely shut down when faced with a confusing problem isn’t making anything easier, but it is something that he has to understand and tackle. Both Christopher’s father and society can be threatening at times, and often do the opposite of what Christopher would’ve been comfortable with at the time, but this is of course, the only way he will grow. Sure, sticky situations create two main internal conflicts for Christopher, but it is the nature of this story that Christopher overcome these obstacles, and become a confident and independent adult. Just like every other teen across the world, Christopher has rough patches while transitioning into an adult, some patches rougher than others. Ultimately, he learns to understand more about his emotions and of the others around him with an impressive amount of maturity by the end. Although Christopher wrote the book surrounding the death of his neighbor’s dog, we learned much more about his intricate life and complicated issues than we ever did about the
