When people are asked about law and what it means to them, there can be many common preconceptions. Perhaps much of society imagines lawyers in fancy suits scolding each other while the judge pounds their gavel. Although these pre conceived ideas from television series and movies may seem real, according to Max (2013), the actual job of being a lawyer is nothing at all like what you see on TV and is possibly less like the real thing than any other profession depicted on television. Personally, I once thought this too. If asked a few weeks ago what law meant to me in regards to study and law in a legal profession, I too would have envisioned these preconceptions. So why did I choose to do it?

In my opinion, crime is inevitable. It is bound to happen and because of that, it creates a balance in society. I discovered this whilst studying sociology in year 12 last year. I was very intrigued by crime and the way in which the law deals with particular cases. An example of this was when my sociology class went to an excursion to Kings Cross in Sydney. A man who was once an ice addict had came and spoken to us. He began to tell us how he fell off the tracks through his drug addiction and had been charged with the possession of a prohibited substance many times before. It was his last charge that became the final straw, and it nearly landed him in jail. Fortunately for him, the judge ordered that he attended a rehabilitation program in Kings Cross. Since then, he has been drug free for six years. This story really stuck out to me because it shows that with law, sometimes every case is different. It showed me that law in regard to crime is not designed to give out the harshest sentences for revenge, but to benefit the safety of society and the individual. I guess you could say the most major aspiration for my interest in justice studies would be my interest in helping society. I am intrigued in the way it functions and how law shapes it. Could you imagine if we had no laws or rules? What would society be like and how would it impact us?
