Ethics is the basic concept of how an individual determines if something is right or wrong. Ethic beliefs are influenced by an individual’s environment, religion, and general culture.
2. What does it mean to be ethical or unethical?
Based on my definition above, being ethical or unethical can be determined differently for every person. I say this because every person has different morals and ethnic beliefs to deem things as they see fit. Ethical means whatever is going on fits into the standards of an individual’s beliefs; to be unethical is the counterpart.
3. Briefly describe a situation when you felt your ethics were challenged.
My ethics were challenged many times in a religious aspect. Unlike many families, I was not “born into” a church; instead, I had been invited to a Pentecostal church as a “bus kid.” Since my mother and I had not lived our whole lives with moral standards set up by the church, we didn’t follow their ethics although we practiced most of their beliefs. When my mother got divorced and prepared to be remarried, other church members looked down upon my family and I didn’t understand why. At this point, I felt challenged to be more engaged in setting up my own ethical belief system because what others deemed inappropriate, I saw as perfectly fine.
