John Kennedy served as president from 1961 to 1963. His presidency ended abruptly when he was assassinated on November 22, 1963. He gave his inaugural address on January 20, 1961, when he was elected the 35th president of the United States. In his speech, Kennedy explains what his beliefs are for the American nation. He talks about liberty, and how the United States will do anything to keep liberty alive in the country. Kennedy also talks about how America, when united, can achieve anything, but divided we can’t do much. His inaugural address is a good example of America because of Kennedy’s explanation of his pledge to other nations and people. John Kennedy gave this speech on October 22, 1962, after the Soviet Union brought missiles and jet fighters into Cuba. The United States was in danger because these missiles had the range to strike any major city in the U.S. During this time, America was involved in the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and tensions between the two countries were high. In Kennedy’s speech, he addresses the problem, explains the supply line coming into Cuba, and explains the steps he is going to take. Some of the more important steps include: halting the supply line, increasing surveillance on Cuba, any missile fired will be considered an attack against America, and holding meetings to ask the Soviet Union to withdrawal from Cuba.
