The idea of mainstreaming children or having an inclusive learning environment has been around for many years. “Inclusion is defined as providing specially designed instruction and support for students with special needs in the context of regular education settings.” (Lindsay) This just means that all students have the same equal opportunity in the traditional educational setting. Children with disabilities have been placed in a separate setting than their peers for many years. It’s been said from special education teachers, parents and administrators that separating students with disabilities are better for them. One thing people fail to realize is that there are benefits of mainstreaming children with disabilities.
Placing students with disabilities whether it 's a mild disability like a learning disorder or a severe disability such as a physical disorder; both end up with a positive result. The most important evidence found in mainstreaming children with disabilities is their feeling of belonging. It allows them to see that even their peers struggle with the same type of subjects they might also struggle with. It opens up a pathway for them to meet new people who are not like them and potentially make new friends. Mainstreaming allows them to step out of a place where they have been confined to and explore. They get to see the same things their peers do in their everyday setting. It gives the students with the disability to observe how a “normal everyday” setting goes and how people act in those settings. That demonstration could help them function outside a school setting and be able to love at least in content with society.
