What Are The 10 Flatteners That Flattened The World

Friedman describes ten flatteners that Flattened the World. The flatteners are ten major political, innovations and companies that contributed to flattening the world. The first took place on November 9th, 1989, it is described as “When the walls came down and the windows came up.” The collapse of the Berlin Wall, symbolized the end of the Cold War. The wall was the barrier between people and then when it was down, the people on the other side were able to join mainstream people. This day is better known as the day communism fell. This change created a new world for users of the internet, and increased content on the internet. In Friedman’s opinion, this was the most disruptive force out of the 10 flatteners. The fifth flattener was outsourcing. In other terms this was when a service is needed from an outsider or third party. The eighth one is insourcing. Insourcing is when companies’ employees will preform a service for another company. The other company will know and the two companies are working together. This can be beneficial in the industry. One example that Friedman uses was UPS. UPS will repair Toshiba Computers, but with Toshiba allowing the service to happen. The service is done through UPS, at the store and with their employees. The next flattener was informing. When people began using the internet this meant that files, document and loads of information were uploaded. Hence, informing other people. Search engines were created. Google is one example of how Friedman states people are able to inform themselves with their own ability. There are constant new search engines being developed. The information on the internet is also endless and with the searches people make it can be thousands in a second. Friedman claims that three years previously there was only 150 million search, at the time of the book written it was up to one billion a day. Presently, that number could have tripled. The last flattener is referred as the steroids. This is something we hold in our hands everyday, cellphones. The development of electronics have change the way of life.
