I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Rich Matteson’s Jazz Corner. I listened to two other tapes, and they were all equally interesting. Rich Matteson’s broadcast had a very relaxed feel; even the tone of his voice is relaxing! I really like that he knew exactly what he was talking about; considering his prolific career and vast knowledge of music and jazz, everything he said was relevant, and he was very well-spoken. His broadcast is excellent for discovering jazz songs and jazz artists, as well as learning information about the records he played.…
I think that hard working is a characteristic of Chris Gardener because after everything he went through with his wife leaving for New York and him not being able to pay his rent and having to take care, feed and give Christopher shelter he had to keep going he had to make sure he got to places on time pick up Christopher and bring him to the homeless shelter by 5:00. Another Characteristic of Chris Gardner is persistent, because no matter how many bad things came along and try to bring him down like the IRS taking out $600 from his account for not paying taxes he kept on going and finding ways to get money he never let anything bring him down he had to keep going because he had to stay strong for Christopher he couldnt tell Christopher that he was not doing good he couldnt tell him that they were broke and would have to be sleeping on subways and bathroomsa lot more.…
Article Assignment #1 In his article “Escalating Transportation Rates Could Trouble Farmers, Increase Consumer Food Prices,” Logan Hawkes discusses the current rise in shipping costs for agricultural goods, as well as the financial “burden” this may place on producers and consumers throughout the US. In the last month, growers from different regions in the West Coast have seen a significant increase in the price of truck shipments to the East Coast. Hawkes notes that the price for a truckload of perishable items traveling from Washington to New York rose by nearly fourteen percent in a period of two weeks during January (from $8,450 to $10,000). Individuals in the trucking industry also warn that these prices may continue to grow in the months…
In the video by Doug Dietz, we see a problem most people overlook being seen and fixed because of one thing: empathy. Doug showed empathy to the family that came to get an MRI scan in the Scanner he designed, so he was able to feel the anxiety and stress faced by the parents and the children. They are the ones the hospital would use the machine on. Hence it is their satisfaction that is important to him. As a designer, I know that a designer feels the most satisfaction when their design serves its purpose in the best way it can and touches the lives of others in the process.…
Mike Rose, the author of “Blue-Collar Brilliance,” argues that intelligence is not something that is defined by formal education, but rather the use of critical thinking and experience. In his essay, Mike Rose uses a plethora of examples ranging from personal experiences, historical examples, and visual content to support his assertion. The argument that education does not equal intelligence leads to an important question: how can intelligence defined and quantified? Mike Rose disputes the notion that blue-collar jobs are simple and mindless in his essay.…
Chris McCandless was a well educated and deeply loved person. Everyone in his family admired his personality and his way of being unique. On the other hand people that only know his story think of him differently. Many people say that Chris was an arrogant rich kid and that he had no business being out in the Alaska wild. People also say that Chris was insane or crazy.…
“I think that Chris McCandless was bright and ignorant at the same time. He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his romantic silliness. He made a lot of mistakes based on arrogance. I don’t admire him at all for his courage nor his noble idea. Really, I think he was just plain crazy.”…
I really enjoyed watching the video. The purpose of John Sinnett 's was that he wanted his students to see that he was engaged just as the students were. From the video, we can see that John is very passionate about his kindergarten students. During his lesson, he gets down on the carpet on the same level as his student to make them feel engaged. This is something that is very important because students are so to teachers telling what to do.…
Reading a standard American history textbook from cover to cover, one would likely not run across many references to the natural world. Occasionally the author mentions the influence of mineral discoveries, or devastating natural disasters such as earthquakes and dust storms, but never how the environment molded the societies that developed within it. Ted Steinberg’s Down to Earth: Nature’s Role in American History is a noticeable departure from this methodology. His ambitious goal is simple, “to change the way you think about American history.” (Steinberg, ix)…
Dana Summers is an editorial cartoonist who wrote for the Orlando Sentimental for thirty years before leaving. His main focus for all of his editorial cartoons is politics in America, and problems surrounding said politics. Summers uses multiple different techniques to get the point across to the viewer of his cartoons. Color is one of the biggest, color sets the tone and mood for the entire cartoon whether that may be bright or dark. Another strong technique he uses is the appeal of logos, creating a logical appeal in the cartoons.…
Although that is all the information that has been given about the mediums used, looking closely at this work it appears a crayon or oil pastel type of media has also been used to form some of the lines within the skull, such as the large black geometric line work almost forming a misshapen cube, the outline to create the teeth of the skull and also the random rapid scribbles that are see on the bottom right hand corner of the canvas. An oil pastel is pigment set into wax, it is a soft wax medium that does not dry. A crayon on the other hand is very similar, but the wax that the pigment is set into is harder, prohibiting the pigment of the crayon somewhat but allowing it to be a dry medium. The tell-tale sign of an oil pastel or crayon is the waxy, rough and broken style of the lines where the pigment of the media is picked up on the raised texture and missed in the minute indents of the canvas, creating a broken look to the…
Throughout history there have been many changes, discoveries and invention around the world. One of the more important inventions that changed the world completely was Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press. It’s many great consequences reshaped the world. The printing press was an amazing invention that became so extraordinary that it was used to print almost anything such as religious books, advertisements, and even literary works…
“Do you think we’re all just products of our environments?” His smile dissolved into a smirk, with the left side of his face resting at ease. “I think so, or maybe products of our expectations.” “Other’s expectations of us or our expectations for ourselves?” “I mean others’ expectations that you take on as your own.”…
Overall with the two videos, I saw how they made parchment from animal skins. It was unbelievable that the transition of the animal skin turns into a thick piece of paper to make a book. However, it is not a fast process when making it. The process of making the animal skins into parchment was they had to pick the right animal with the right skin texture. Then they put the animal skin in lime water for some days so the hair can loosen up and be scraped off for into a smooth surface.…
Edvard Munch painted the famous painting which he named “The Scream” to represent his past. The painting consists of a child standing at the edge of the road facing a different direction from his companions who seem to be walking towards a different direction. The child is screaming while facing the departing companions. “The Scream” is a name given to represent each of the four versions of his paintings which are kept at the Munch museum. The aim of this paper is to analyze the painting.…
