Van Gogh's Starry Night

Decent Essays
In Starry Night, Van Gogh uses the 7 elements of art. He uses line by using that technique to paint the sky. He uses visible brushstrokes to create areas rich with texture. The organic shape of the cypress tree contrasts the geometric forms of the building. The yellow highlights in the sky help move your eye around from all the blue. The tree in the front seems bigger than the buildings because it’s closer up.

In this essay I will discuss the ways that Vincent Van Gogh’s, The Night Cafe, 1888 was used as influence for Ernest Ludwig Kirchner’s, Street, Dresden, 1908. To prove my point I will provide visual analyzations of the pieces, some background to the artists and the art movements they were associated with, and events that happened around the time the paintings were created that affected many artists and the work they created. Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, Night Cafe, depicts a scene a cafe with four empty tables as well as three with people seated at them. There is a green pool table at the center of the room that casts a large orange shadow onto the yellow floor. There is a man with neon green hair in a yellow suit standing to the right of…

During his stay, he painted Starry Night. That image is the view from Van Gogh’s window at the asylum. He used impasto to create his painting. One of the elements that he used was the use of lines. He used lines in his piece when painting the swirls in the sky and the lines are made to represent that the sky is moving (Debrah J. DeWitte 416-417).…

The artwork I chose to imagine is Van Gogh’s famous oil painting called Starry Night. It was painted in June of 1889 and has grown to be known as one of his most famous paintings. Van Gogh was a post-impressionist and painted Starry Night from memory in his apartment. The view is of a village from a window in an asylum. I chose this painting because it has always been hanging in my Aunt’s living room.…

“Every art should become science, and every science should become art,” (Heinrich von Schlegel). I think that this quote relates to comparing art and considering that comparing art is a science. All the colors that the artists used on both of the paintings were both different than each other. The Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo de Vinci didn’t have incredibly countless colors compared to Starry Night which was painted by Vincent van Gogh. Gogh’s Starry Night used mostly blue with hints of yellow, green and white, while the Mona Lisa used mostly brown with just a slight fragment of other colors in the background.…

I think the scream is a great painting overall. I wanted to do Van Gogh’s Starry Night, but realized that wasn’t an option after reading the paper requirements since we looked at it in class. I was going to go for another Van Gogh painting, but when I looked up his name I found The Scream and went for that one. One thing that really brings the piece together is the lines.…

Great job at evaluating on The Starry Night, by Vincent van Gogh. I agree with you that this artwork is more on Dionysian, as I have replied back to another post previously on the same artwork. I think that this artwork is more of a Dionysian because when looking at this artwork I did not need to think much, but instead I have admire its true form of art taking in its asthetic value. Compared to my artwork that I have chosen to write about it was clearly an Apollonian apporach to the artwork because Leonardo uses mathematic and theories from another work to create his drawing. I found it interesting that Vincent was mentally ill, I for one have never read about that.…

This iconic artwork uses even more dynamic broken brushstrokes and powerful single colours to express feeling. The overall meaning of the painting expresses van goghs isolation and struggles as an unappreciated artist. The 11 stars most likely symbolize Van Gogh's critics and it is possible that Van Gogh identifies himself with the looming cypress tree in the foreground of the painting. The large cypress in Starry Night is arguably the most eyecatching but at the same time ambiguous "thing" in the painting, mostly because of its size and the way its dark and almost sinister presence contrasts so heavily with the brightly colored stars and luminescent shapes and strokes in the night sky.…

“Starry Night” is a poem by Anne Sexton that was written to show her own analysis of the painting by Vincent van Gogh which holds the same name. While the painting is a beautiful work in itself, Sexton’s poem provides details that accentuates the painting. Sexton’s interpretation of the painting is completely angled toward a beautiful death experience. Sexton’s poem is filled with imagery, figurative language, and diction that brings more life and understanding to the painting. Anne Sexton created a mental picture for the reader by providing descriptive words that appeal to the senses.…

Art has been the most basic form of self expression for thousands of years, from hieroglyphics and political cartoons, to the most iconic--The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. However, clouded by popular belief on what is qualified as art, many paintings, statues, and even buildings have never gotten their time to shine as an impactful piece of art, even though they are equally responsible for shaping modern artistic techniques. When someone sees an impressive building, anywhere in the world, they consider the size, shape, and colors, maybe snap a photo, then move on. What those people have failed to do is look at the surface, instead merely dipping their foot into a world of meticulous details and precise symmetry. People all around the world…

The simplistic subject matter does not take away from the painting’s beauty or significance. I think it is important for artists to create work that contains a message or makes the viewer question their own viewpoint, but I also believe that it is important to focus on small moments that show the beauty of everyday life. Starry Night by Van Gogh is a work of art that most people can instantly recognize because it has been reproduced and replicated on everyday items such as t-shirts and posters but that does not mean it is not an important piece of art. It is a painting that can be appreciated by both art critiques and casual viewers because it is an iconic…

Van Gogh uses color in a very deliberate and effective way in The Night Café. He selects the colors not based on his visual interpretation of the room but on the psychological and emotional effects it has on its occupants. He explains to his brother Theo, in a letter, that he uses the red and green in an attempt to express the terrible passions of human nature. The use of these colors helps to illustrate the intensity of the Café de la Gare and provoke the emotions of the viewer who may relate the bar scene to alcoholism or depression. He also balances the wooden browns and yellows of the lower half of the painting with a dark wooden clock adorned with a vibrant yellow face at the top of the painting.…
