Discovered in 1781 by William Herschel, Uranus has been puzzling scientists with its unique features. For years the only method in which the planet Uranus could be studied was through the telescope. All information gathered on the distant planet could not be confirmed with a close up observation. The launch of NASA’s Voyager 2 in August of 1977, intended for the study of the outer solar system has provided pertinent information on the planet. On January 24, 1986, Voyager came within 100,000 km of the planet. It discovered eleven new moons (Cordelia, Ophelia, Bianca, Cressida, Desdemona, Juliet, Portia, Rosalind, Belinda, Perdita, and Puck). It also was able to study the planet’s atmosphere which is unique due to the axil tilt of 97.8 degrees and studied Uranus’s ring system. Due to the axil tilt Uranus’s poles point directly at or away from the sun which causes the half away for the sun to have long dark winters. It also changes the magnetic fields of the planet which are usually in line with the rotation of the planet. The ring system of Uranus has 2 sets of rings. The inner system includes 9 rings which were discovered in 1977 and an outer system including 2 rings. The outer rings were …show more content…
Uranus was the son and husband of Gaia, Mother Earth. Gaia and Uranus’s children include their six sons, Oceanus, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus and Cronus and six daughters Theia, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe and Tethys. They were known as the Titans. In addition to their sons and daughters Uranus was the father of the Cyclopes. Uranus hid away his children in the pit of Tartarus inside Gaia. When Uranus did this Gaia asked her son Cronos to castrate his father to put an end to his fertility and stop further offspring. From his castration more creatures were born. Uranus separated from Gaia and the two have been separated since then. Uranus is an ancestor to all Greek figures, giving life to the first ever

On March 13, 1781, William Herschel was looking at the sky through one of his telescopes that he had built himself, looking for anything interesting, when he noticed something that wasn’t a star and he thought it was a comet. A year later astronomer A.J. Lexell calculated its path and discovered that it was actually a planet. Herschel wanted to name it after the king, but other astronomers wanted to name it after Herschel, which it was for a time until they changed it to Uranus after the sky-god of Greek mythology. Astronomers made predictions about the movement of Uranus, but after a few years, they saw that it wasn’t moving in the exact way that they thought it would. The way planets move is affected by the pull of other planets.…

Uranus the primal Greek god personifying the sky. His equivalent in Roman mythology was Caelus. In Ancient Greek literature, Uranus or Father Sky was the son and husband of Gaia, Mother Earth. According to Hesiod's Theogony, Uranus was conceived by Gaia alone, but other sources cite Aether as his father. Uranus and Gaia were the parents of the first generation of Titans, and the ancestors of most of the Greek gods, but no cult addressed directly to Uranus survived into Classical times, and Uranus does not appear among the usual themes of Greek painted pottery.…

Christiaan Huygens discovered the first known moon of Saturn. The year was 1655 and the moon was Titan. Giovanni Domenico Cassini made the next four discoveries: Iapetus (1671), Rhea (1672), Dione (1684), and Tethys (1684).…

The Greek Creation myths is represented by the earth, and the sky as the earth Goddess, Gaia was created from the raging chaos that existed before the beginning of time. She gave birth to Uranus, the king of the sky. They became the first husband and wife. The underworld is represented because Gaia and Uranus bore many children, but they were monsters with 100 arms and one eyed creatures called Cyclops (University of Phoenix,,1995-2020).These monsters were like giants.…

The chance discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781 prompted the events that eventually led to the mathematical detection of Neptune (SOURCE). French scientist and mathematician, Pierre Simon de Laplace developed mathematical expressions, by applying Newton’s law of universal gravitation, for the reciprocal perturbation exerted by planets due to their gravitational attraction in his acclaimed treatise on celestial mechanics. Using these expressions, a table containing the positions of planets over time could be achieved. The calculations of the tables, that predicted the movements of the planets, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus begun in 1821 at the Bureau des Longitudes by mathematician Alexis Bouvard (SOURCE). Although the calculations for…

For our lab presentations, Natalie Lutz and I chose to research other planetary systems. We knew this was a topic that would lightly be discussed in class and therefore decided we could educate our peers further on the topic. It offered a look into the different types of ways planetary systems are discovered and the different ones that have already been discovered. Extrasolar planets are defined as planets rotating around other stars- or remnants of stars. This is comparable to our planet rotating around the Sun.…

The scientific significance of New Horizons was great. Up to this point, we had uncovered several mysteries about the planets in the solar system. However, the dwarf planets and smaller objects in our solar system’s outer reaches had great potential for scientific discovery as well. Pluto was chief among these. Specifically, the mission of New Horizons was to explore the Pluto – Charon system, as well as some of their Kuiper Belt cousins (New Frontiers Program, 2015).…
