War and patriotism seem to play a significant role in the United States laws and culture. It was insightful to learn as explained by Boris (nd) that “Following World War I, many soldiers who had been injured in Europe returned home. These war-related disabilities let to the passage of the Vocational Rehabilitation act of 1920” (p. 4). Throughout history, prior to this legislation, there is an implied callousness exhibited toward individuals with disabilities. However patriotic individuals who, prior to war, functioned without any disabilities return to their loved ones. One must consider whether or not this helped connect on an emotional level with law makers. This chronology was significant because there were many cultural shifts occurring across the United States at this same time. The country was recovering from a controversial war, and many citizens embraced the concepts of love and acceptance. Could the timing for these key pieces of legislation aide in their development?
