This, however, would have to be undertaken only when the therapist has a detailed knowledge of the individual and their desired…

As mentioned previously, the study of psychotherapy encompasses a variety of theoretical approaches. Each form of therapy borrows elements from each other, while building upon new ideas and techniques to call their own. Psychotherapy is described as “A collaborative treatment based on the relationship between an individual and a psychologist. Grounded in dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows [the client] to talk openly with someone who’s objective, neutral, and nonjudgmental” (“Understanding Psychotherapy,” n.d.). Psychotherapy assists people in modifying their emotions, cognitions, and behaviors.…
Maddy Stark Ms. Towne Psy 110 14 December 2015 If a person needed psychotherapy, they could either choose individual therapy or group therapy to help with their problems. Both have their pros and cons but group therapy has been proven to work a little bit better than individual therapy. Group therapy tends to work better than individual therapy.…
Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Original Design Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was first developed by Marsha Linehan for the treatment of individuals suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and suicidal or self-injurious behavior (Swales, 2009). In her work with these individuals, Marsha noticed that many of them were not engaged in or collaborating with a therapeutic process based on change. She hypothesized that many of these individuals did not believe they had the ability to change, so a therapeutic method based on change was not going to work.…
I feel that individuals should consider the possible side effects before taking medications for their mental illnesses. There are many side effects to drugs and it is crucial to be aware of them before taking a handful of pills. There are many different therapies that I would look into before taking medication. Medication can be a successful treatment for various mental illnesses, but there are therapies that could do as well if not better without potential side effects. For severe cases of schizophrenia and depression, many need medications to even function in this world.…
The question of which is more critical, the treatment modality or the counselor-patient relationship, in psychotherapy has always been questioned. A meta-analysis by Bowers and Clum (1988) found that therapy with a focus on both the therapeutic relationship and treatment modality had a combined effect size of .76, while therapy with treatment modality focus only had an effect size of .55. Thus, empirical data warrants that both the technique and the relationship weigh in the effectiveness of psychotherapy, with the common factors of therapy, the therapeutic relationship focus, contributing .21 standard deviations to the effect size. Based off the broad finding that most forms of psychotherapy confer equivalent outcomes when compared, some have…

Assessment of The Whole Self The provision of evaluation entails the collection of data to identify, examine, assess, and address the problems, issues, and situations of clients in the counseling relationship. Assessments likewise help in determining what questions to ask and how the resulting information will be utilized in arriving at a diagnosis (Jones, 2010). Whether a clinician practices in a school, private practice, or other health care settings, assessment play an integral role (Hutchinson, 2015). Assessing The Whole Person The practice of counseling is associated with assessment and diagnosis and is indispensable for designing treatment.…
1. How are you doing on your plan? I would say my self confidence has improved. I have performed well when given a blank treatment plan and needing to come up with one on the spot when treating a patient for the first time. I have learned to just my "gut instinct" when it comes to therapeutic exercises or activities, because when I second guess myself it causes me to lose confidence in myself. At the end of each day, we (me and whichever OT I am with that day) digest how the day went, the session, and what can we do next and so far I've been told my self confidence level has improved and I am doing a great job with setting up treatment plans for patients.…
Whilst it is ethical to use the methods and techniques of more than one therapy with a client, it is also important that the counsellor has an understanding of any therapeutic model they use. There are two forms of mixing therapies; integrative and eclectic. Integrative therapists are trained in two or more therapeutic models on the same course and use different skills to single-model skills. The model has its own distinct structure and expected outcomes from the counselling are usually clearly stated. Eclecticism is where a therapist is trained in a single model of counselling and sometimes ‘dips in and out’ of using another technique e.g. a person-centred counsellor using elements of CBT.…
Irvin Yalom stated, “Therapy should not be theory driven, but relationship driven” (Yalom, 2009). The theory that you choose to use is important…

What I learned in this course In this course, I completed reading the text Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy written by Gerald Corey, which helped me have a better understanding of different types of theories and how they can benefit or help potential clients I may have. From all the theories studied in this course, there are some theories that I would like to apply that would be beneficial in helping me guide my clients to the right path. Person-centered therapy: In this therapy, Carl Roger recommended that the client would have the best help if the therapist motivates the client to concentrate on the problem then on the interpretation that others have on the situation.…
